About the A-League 2024-2025

The 2024–25 A-League Football Season kicks off on October 18 with the Central Coast Mariners taking on Melbourne Victory. Play continues until the Grand Finals for both leagues in May 2025. This year sees a new team in the men's competition – Auckland FC.

What teams play in the A-League 2024-2025?

Adelaide United, Brisbane Roar, Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne City, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets, Perth Glory, Sydney FC, Wellington Phoenix, Western Sydney Wanderers, and Western United are fielding teams in both the men’s and women’s competitions, with Macarthur FC and Auckland FC fielding only a men’s side.

A-League History

A-League Men was inaugurated in 2004 by the Football Federation Australia, superseding the National Soccer League, which was very much on its last legs at that point. That same year saw the dissolution of the Women’s National Soccer League, only returning in the form of the A-League Women in 2008. Things have certainly changed since then, however; the sport has seen huge gains in popularity, with women’s football in particular seeing a massive uptick thanks to the Matildas’ recent spectacular performance on the international stage.

Sydney FC dominates the records in the men's comp, claiming Most Premiership Titles (4), Most Championship Titles (5), Biggest Premiership Title Winning Margin: (17 points over Melbourne in 2016–17), and Most Points in a Season (66 points in 2016-2017). In the women's league, Melbourne City and Sydney FC tie for Most Championships (4), with Sydney comfortably leading for most Premierships (5). And speaking of the Matildas, sensational Sam Kerr is currently tied for Most Julie Dolan Medals with now-retired Canberra United striker Michelle Heyman, with two each.
