This Week’s Best Trailers – Big Beasts, Little Princes, & the Women of Wall St.

We’re gifted with hot ‘n’ tasty trailers on a weekly basis from all around the world. Some of them are for blockbusters, others are for fascinating indie films. This week was no different.

We did get some pretty naff trailers too, including a nearly five minute look at Independence Day: Resurgence that detailed the whole film and another look at Sing that looks like a bad cover of Zootopia. But let’s not focus on them; take a look at this week’s winners.

Beauty and the Beast – Teaser

Sometimes, I wish teasers were the only things we were allowed to see before a film’s release… Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast rubs the nostalgia shoulders with that immortal score and scenes that strike the perfect balance of familiar and new. Everyone is aching to know what the beast looks like (and his animated kitchen ware), but this teaser doesn’t show you (partly because the CGI isn’t ready yet), which only makes me want to see this more.

The best bit: Finding out why that sense of familiarity is so damn strong once you see this side-by-side comparison with the animated film.

Beauty and the Beast releases 23rd March, 2017.

Equity – Trailer

It’s great we’re finally getting a feature that lets Breaking Bad‘s Anna Gunn bear her acting fangs, but the material she gets to chow down on looks just as exciting.

Equity is loud and proud to promote women in a genre dominated by men. Judging from the trailer, though, you can see the parts that hit the message with an unsubtle clang – “Men like a girl they can take care of” – and others that pierce right through to the marrow of what a woman in power has to face on a daily basis -“the perception is that you rub people the wrong way.”

The best bit: Gunn is laying her wisdom on a fellow co-worker, saying “When Ed hits on you, you have to handle him professionally and very gently.” With an uncomfortable yet assured look on her face, the young woman replies “Yeah… I know how this works.” Some lessons are learned very early, it seems…

Equity currently does not have a release date.

The Little Prince – Netflix Trailer

If there’s a formula to making great trailers for animated films, The Little Prince used it. The contrasting use of different animation techniques is hugely intriguing. The music has a tenderness and warmth reminiscent of the last Winnie the Pooh trailer. And anything is made 20 times better with Jeff Bridges’ fatherly voice on top of it.

The best bit: The end moment sees the little prince looking at a baby plant with the girl narrating. It then cuts to her staring at a doll version of the prince. Is she making the whole thing up? Or has the story been passed down to her? You can’t quite tell, but I desperately want to find out.

The Little Prince comes to Netflix 5th August.
