Chinese crime thriller from director Johnnie To (Drug War) about a crim who purposely shoots himself when overwhelmed by police. Transported to hospital, he does all he can to stay in care until his fellow thugs can break him out. But the detective sees through his plan and concocts one of his own: set the place up and trap the entire gang all at once.

Monty Python’s Life of Brian

Event Newmarket (AKLD) – 8:00pm Friday 24th June

Monty Python’s classic religious satire about poor old Brian, born on Christmas in the stable next to Jesus, who spends his life being mistaken for the Messiah.

Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision (WGTN) – 7:00pm Wednesday 29th June

The 1987 New Zealand period drama, directed by Barry Barclay and written by Tama Poata, is getting a solo screening over at the great audiovisual heritage Colosseum of Aotearoa.

The Dark Horse

Playing in Regent Theatre Te Awamutu (Waikato)

The winner of Best Film at the 2014 Moas is getting a few screens this week. If you still haven’t seen this great local film, do yourself a solid and watch it in a cinema. Go on. You deserve it.

Blind Date & Boomerang

Playing in Academy Cinema (AKLD)

Academy cinemas are complementing last week’s release Marguerite with screening of French rom-com Blind Date, where the two leads in love remain anonymous throughout almost the entire film, and French whodunit drama Boomerang, starring Mélanie Laurent (Enemy) and Laurent Lafitte (Little White Lies).

Playing in Limited Release Nationwide

French comedy based on Calbérac’s 2012 play of the same name. Flicks user freshdude calls it “a good film done with intelligence, tact and humour.”

Light House Cuba (AKLD) – 6:00pm Tuesday 28th June, 8:00pm 29th June

2006 documentary on the death of the electric car. Ten years later, this documentary is still relevant.
