Zach Snyder Defends ‘Man of Steel’ Ending

It’s been two years since Zach Snyder’s Man of Steel hit cinemas (as well as buildings, planes, trucks, civilians, and gravel). The film gained a lot of criticism for its apathetic attitude towards the large-scale destruction witness in the climax, an ending that Snyder defends.

“I was surprised because that’s the thesis of Superman for me, that you can’t just have superheroes knock around and have there be no consequences,” Snyder told Entertainment Weekly, claiming he had always intended for the numerous people left dead in the wake of the battle to be accounted for. Just… not in the epilogue for Man of Steel for some reason. I guess hinting at the consequence of Superman’s carelessness was less important than showing a female soldier commenting on how hot he is.

Fortunately, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice looks to address the collateral damage head-on. Ben Affleck, who plays The Dark Knight in this follow-up, added “One of the things I liked was Zack’s idea of showing accountability and the consequences of violence and seeing that there are real people in those buildings. And in fact, one of those buildings was Bruce Wayne’s building so he knew people who died in that Black Zero event.”

As X-Men: Days of Future Past has proven, a sequel can legitimately fix the problems of previous films. Let’s hope Snyder can do the same.

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ is scheduled for release 24th March, 2016.
