HISTORY
The Mayfair was the third cinema built by Garnett Saunders, and opened in 1916 to great fanfare - "the acme of perfection" the Daily News declared. The Mayfair closed in 1993 and became home to Arthouse Cinema in January 2010 after the Arthouse Trust exhausted the possibilities of guerilla cinema at Butlers Reef, Oakura and in the Govett Brewster over 2009. Arthouse has run principally with volunteers, sponsorship and donations and does so on a shoestring in order to provide an alternative cinematic experience to patrons. The old building seems glad to have everybody back.
