African Odyssey
Armed with no motorcycle experience and an HD camera four fellas from small-town Whakatane, New Zealand, decided to screw the job, the good advice and the horror stories of Africa and set off on the adventure of a life time - crossing the length of the mighty African continent, on motorbikes most wouldn't ride to the cow shed.
Countless border crossings, rogue animals, debilitating bouts of diarrhea and about three thousand seventy two pot holes later, they bring you African Odyssey - a full length documentary that captures the joy of adventure, Africa, motorbikes and sharing it all with friends.

The only bad thing about this doco is that you will want to quit your job and embark on an adventure of a life time too.

Haven't seen this but....

all the people making a point about the fact that these guys didn't delve deeper into the whole 'african' experience, bringing in the poverty, AIDS etc etc, you'd be advised that knowing that Africa is not a COUNTRY but a CONTINENT and is made up of LOTS of different countries, each with their own unique problems and situations. It would have had to have been a twenty hour doco to get through that much info.

Relaxing and fun movie to watch with mates

Good for newbie to motorbike travel adventure. Highlights were amazing animal and some good historic site footage. Most interesting the problems overcome with the bikes and travel. Seemed to fly by, could have gone deeper for sure, but interesting light and entertaining viewing. I enjoyed it. I was surprised by the levels of poverty shown in Africa, sure it was a bit colonial but it was really just a quick drive (6 months from South to North Africa) and I thick inspiring to see the team comraderie and good goal achieved with the film record.

I'd just like to say I think the last couple of reviews missed the mark.
This is a great story of four guys on an adventure. They don't claim to be out to solve Africa's problems. I find it refreshing to see a film that highlights the beauty and positives that are going on in the great continent rather than the negative. It's an inspiring and gutsy journey... plus the soundtrack was amazing.

Missed an opportunity
2
I commend you for having an idea, raising the funds, and seeing it through! The scenes of Africa and the soundtrack were great. However, I think that the boys missed out on a great opportunity to show that Kiwis, like themselves, actually care about Africa, the culture, its people, and the many struggles and conflicts throughout the country. Don't get me wrong, I understand that the movie was about a bunch of mates having a good time and adventure, but wasn't it also about each of these men finding inspiration in a continent and the possibility of finding something larger than themselves? If not, then you hit the mark. Otherwise, I would have been more inspired by seeing some young men finding beauty not in just what they expected (the environment, the great motorcycle ride, the animals) but rather in what was unexpected? For example, they could have included more commentary on the hospitality of the people throughout the country? or even mention just a bit about Apartheid? poverty? civilian war? AIDS? the hope of people who struggle to live in third world countries? anything that Africa is known for to the rest of the world? Disappointing ...

Many opportunities taken but in my view bigger opportunities were missed

I left the screening feeling that I had partaken in a guilty pleasure. The pleasure is in sharing an enviable adventure in the worlds most beautiful country with keen spirited, likeable characters and endless awe inspiring backdrops. However, in my view the Africa of African Odyssey is Utopian. There is little mention of the injustice, the murder, the famine, disease and poverty that has blighted African people, not even in the post-take narratives or question and answer session after the film. However plenty of ideas it seems about future capital gain through associated projects.

caught the boys journey in whakatane - such an enjoyable ride - heaps to marvel at, from the views, the boys sweet attitudes, their classic sense of humour's and the wicked job they did as amateurs recording the whole journey.
