Island of Lost Souls
1932 horror based on H.G. Wells's The Island of Dr. Moreau. An obsessed scientist (a young Charles Laughton) conducts profane experiments in evolution, eventually establishing himself as the self-styled demigod to a race of mutated, half-human abominations.
Carnival of Souls
A 1962 independent horror film, director Herk Harvey's only film. Harvey raised the money and took three weeks off work to make the film. It was an obscure, macabre release at the time, but over the years has been rediscovered as a cult classic.
