Get to know her, then meet her.

Made as the winning entry of the Make My Movie competition (in which aspiring filmmakers contested for $NZ 100,000 to make a movie from scratch). A comedy about one stalker's search for true love. More

Toby (co-writer Richard Falkner) hopes to graduate from pretending he has a girlfriend to going out with the attractive Phoebe (Scarlet Hemingway). With the help of 'date coach' Carl (Jonathan Brugh) he might just be able to pull it off. Steve Newall Flicks Writer

Most of the talk around How to Meet Girls From a Distance to date has revolved around its origins in the Make My Movie competition and tiny hundred grand budget, but the great news is that the film’s tight production schedule and minimal resources barely impact on its crowd-pleaser status. Maybe it could have used another take here or a bit more polish there, but if you’re looking out for such things you’ll be missing out on a film packed with laughs. More

Lead actor Richard Falkner - also one of the writers and the film’s composer - does a great job of anchoring the film as a shy, relatable, everyman stalker. His range is occasionally stretched a little (most notably in a cafe meltdown scene), though there are plenty of effortless laughs from love coach and scene-stealer Jonathan Brugh.

How to Meet Girls shows so many better-resourced films how local comedy can be done – with a good idea and confidence to bend the rules of a conventional format. Well-written, remarkably well-made and bloody funny, it won’t take you long to be rooting for this underdog. Hide

Just See it

DnA Flicks Superstar (?)

The must see movie of the year. This sets a new benchmark for Kiwi comedies. It's just incredibly funny from beginning to end. It's been sometime since I've heard an audience laugh so much. OMG. A seriously great movie.

I had some pre-conceptions of the story and the film was nothing like what I'd imagined. So I'm not going to tell you about it. We already have some classic movie lines being quoted around the household. This movie is set to become a classic. I expect it to do well with international audiences as well. You just cant help falling in love with the characters and following them on their journeys. This movie is top notch in all departments. Incredible. Hats off to the MakeMyMovie competition that this grew from.

as a wellington local this gets 1 star just 'cos i can recognise the locations
the cringing foolishness and try hard antics of the lead are very droll
well worth investing a few $ and chilling out with for an hour or so

Husband & I saw this in Auckland, thanks to Flicks. We both loved it. Beautiful views of Welly, likeable characters - some normal-ish, some insanely exaggerated - hilarious, cringey, clever comedy; such a refreshing difference from a formulaic hollywood rom-com. Yay for NZ movies.

Funny and smart

Brendon B-Grader (?)

My expectations were low, how much fun could a ultra low budget kiwi comedy ready be? Thankfully the answer was loads of fun. A smart script and plenty of laugh out loud moments made this a super enjoyable night at the cinema. Recommended.

I love NZ films - so Thanks Flicks for the tickets to the premier! I really enjoyed this movie, perhaps it was low budget - but well made, a great laugh and I enjoyed seeing Wellington hot spots & land marks throughout the film. Nothing beats a home grown kiwi comedy - I loved it!

How to Make an Unlikeable Character (Almost) Likeable

Mick28 A-Lister (?)

The writers (Falkner, Dickson, Hewison) and lead (Falkner again) have to be praised for making what could potentially be an extremely unlikeable character (almost) likeable. For a brief moment near the start of the third act the film looked to be heading down a darker road which might have been slightly more interesting to explore. On the whole though it is an entirely forgettable film which could have done with better character development from the lead character of Toby.

Quite funny... for a kiwi film

Amanda-Bateman B-Grader (?)

I am one of many New Zealanders who cringe in anticipation of seeing a local film. Apart from the likes of Boy, they tend to be very self-conscious, poorly scripted, overacted and the actors typecast into whichever character they played in Shortland Street. Luckily I haven't watched Shortland St in over 15 years and I didn't recognise a single actor in this film. The film had a few great laughs and was quickly paced so that it stayed entertaining. The script was awkward at times and the lesbian girlfriend and the ex of the obsessee were truly awful one-dimensional characters with all the acting nuance of a high school production. I think this will appeal to Wellingtonians more than audiences elsewhere due to all the location shots.

Laugh out loud funny

WellyHelly Nobody (?)

Well done this film! The leading guy carries the film so well. The other characters are quirky and also likeable. There was many laugh out loud moments and all-in-all i totally enjoyed it. It doesn't scream 'low budget', it is just a well written, well exectuted story.

Nice surprise

JHollingsworth Nobody (?)

I went with little expectation and was rewarded with a quirky, well scripted funny film. Pulled it all together well and had some nice touches that I didn't see coming.I enjoyed it more than quite a few more heavily touted NZ movies.

NZ humour and well worth seeing!

BritComedyFan B-Grader (?)

I loved this movie. Funny NZ humour, set in Wellington and the nerdy humour theme song "Creepy" has introduced me to the NZ band "The Eversons'. The counsellor reminds me of Murray off the Flight of the Conchords. All the characters are beautiful or quirky. Go see this movie!

Taken by surprise

MeganRY Wannabe (?)

I went to this film knowing absolutely nothing about it and was glad I went (it was a beautiful sunny day outside!). It was great seeing local places as I didn't realise it was a local film. The actors were unknown to me, which is refreshing. It has subtle humour that had me laughing out loud....love randomness and this film had bags of it.
I'll definitely be recommending this film. Thanks Flicks! :)

How to win a movie competition and make it worth while

RealityCheck Flicks Superstar (?)

How to Meet Girls From a Distance
What a fantastic film! Richard Falkner (main character as well) is winner of 'Make My Movie' competition and I gotta say, even though mine didnt get made (yes I entered) I am so glad this won. What a superb story, good acting and amazingly well story portrayal. Its right up there with any other international Rom-Com in my books. Fully enjoyed it, and even the score was funny to listen too (honestly the lyrics are good). Left my seat laughing and honestly feeling awesome about being me.
Genre : comedy, romantic, growth
4/5 : not just NZ humour but well rounded-global funny

The funniest NZ comedy since ...

freshdude Flicks Superstar (?)

... well I don't actually remember a Kiwi flick that made me laugh like this.
Unfortunately a lot of people will not be giving it a chance after having experienced the epic fail of "Two little boys" and "Fresh Meat" , which is a shame because this one is genuinely fun. A real crowd pleaser in the best sense of the term, with laugh-out loud moments and entertaining characters. You want a laugh, go see it .
