Narration-free documentary made up of several months’ shooting in Maïdan, Kiev’s central square, in the lead up to 2014’s Ukrainian revolution. Documents the popular gathering’s euphoria, its first confrontation with government forces, and the first drop of blood.
Protests against President Ianoukovitch began in the square in November 2013, and director Sergeï Loznitsa arrived shortly after to capture what was taking place. Like everyone else, Loznitsa had no idea what would eventually happen, but he kept his cameras rolling. In contrast to TV news, Loznitsa opts to present his film without commentary, with the intention of allowing the viewer to be as close as possible to events.
