Back in time.

J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) don the black suits again for the third instalment of the extra-terrestrial FBI comedy franchise. Meanwhile Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men) makes first appearance alongside Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement. More

When K suddenly disappears, J is informed his partner has been dead for over 20 years. This perplexing paradox isn't just a threat to the missing MiB veteran, but also to humankind. Agent J jumps back in time (literally) and partners up with the younger Agent K (Brolin) to set matters straight. Hide

The first Men in Black hit the ‘90s like Hanson hit the hearts of pre-teen girls of the same era, blending edge-cutting CGI with some comedic chemistry created between its two polar-opposite leads. With its expansive universe, it seemed as if the franchise could have stretch out for many films, though the abysmal sequel screwed the pooch on that possibility. More

After a decade of absence, we’re confusingly presented with this three-quel to a series many of us stopped caring about. The trailers also showed little promise with standard-issue FX and overloaded Will Smith-isms (though, to the film’s credit, not once did I hear an “Aw hell naw!”).

However, MiB 3 isn’t a bad movie at all; it’s simply a vapid one. Isolated throughout the movie are some truly neat ideas that they fail to capitalise on. Jemaine Clement is superb as the lead baddie Boris the Animal, but is given only 15 minutes onscreen. The time-jumping mechanic is a totally badass visual fiesta, but is only used twice. Josh Brolin is freakishly convincing as a younger Agent K but isn’t given anything interesting to do, spending most of his time droning out one-word reactions.

Without the CGI wow factor or the punchy script that carried the original, there just isn’t enough left to recommend in MiB 3. There are spots of visual ingenuity and a great understanding of 3D that’s rarely seen, but it’s a timid wasteland of potential. Hide

Love The Men In Black series

Aidan1 Flicks Superstar (?)

I love the Men In Black series and this was another great movie with a great story and i thought the ending was awesome. Will Smith & Tommy Lee Jones are my favourite actors and i was blown away by the performance of Josh Brolin playing Young Agent K i thought it was a great idea replacing Rip Torn with Emma Thompson. 5 Stars

Men in Black 3

Critic Wannabe (?)

This film, though started off rather boringly, ended out to be one of my favorite movies of all time, this movie mushes comedy, action, and i guess a little bit of romance into a awesome blockbuster motion picture. I would defiantly say that this flicks review is shockingly harsh, and makes the movie sound bad, (excuse the language but F*ck you Flicks Reviewer and Empire. Good day.

Almost there but not quite

RexH Flicks Superstar (?)

It was nice to see MIB back in black. The familiar things were still there (but whatever happened to that grumpy dog?). Over the years, I've begun to suffer from vertigo, so seeing Will climb out onto one of the Chrysler Building's gargoyles was a twitchy, leg-crossing experience! The 3D was nicely handled throughout. The story... not so much.
There were a number of missed opportunities here; a chance for critique instead of easy targets (Warhol and the Factory was a laboured joke). I thought of "Life on Mars" or the "Star Trek" movie where they turn up in modern California - Chekhov's "Take me to your nuclear wessel!" is forever imprinted in my mind. No such imprinting from this film, alas.
Instead, we get scenes that may as well have been played in 2012. That said, the plot was nevertheless interesting and the face off at Canaveral (more vertigo!) effective. But it was the finale that got me: straight out of left field! And an effectively poignant moment (I'm not giving it away) where the look on Agent J's face says a lot more than words. For me, this scene alone is worth three stars.

Were the other MIBs this bad?

the-Habit B-Grader (?)

I am trying to understand how this is number in the box office. Is it possible that all the MIBs were this bad. I certainly never thought they were master pieces (and I do remember MIB2 being a let down) but I do remember likeing them. Im wondering if I was such a Will Smith fan boy back then that i liked it just because he was in it? It seems to me that everone who has written a positive review of MIB3 is just that; a screeming Will Smith fan boy/girl. This is a terrable movie PLEASE dont go and see it or they may make another one!

Enjoyed this movie more than i thaught i would. The end of this movie was great a brilliant twist to the way men in black has been going. However I do hope this is the last of the series as it will get old quick if a fourth movie is made.

I am not the biggest Men in Black fan, but I've got to say I enjoyed Men in Black 3. I thought it was the best one so far. It was predictable but it was fun. If you're a big fan of the Men in Black series, I suggest you watch this, you will not be disappointed.

Black Suits Are Back In Style!

Jordan Flicks Superstar (?)

It has been a decade since Agents K (Tommy Lee Jones) and J (Will Smith) have graced the silver screen with their trademark style.
So has this hiatus given them a stronger story than their previous adventure?

The answer is a resounding yes.

K and J return with a new boss in O (Emma Thompson), and a new villain to chase down in Boris The Animal (played by New Zealand's own, Jermaine Clement).
With a mixture of time travel elements revealing a younger K (portrayed FANTASTICALLY by Josh Brolin), and avoiding trying to live up to the former (disregarding the sequel that felt EVER so similar to the first), it's a nice tale that covers off story we had yet to see, while delivering the ambiance and amazing aliens we had come to expect of the series.

You will not need a Neuraliser after watching this film!

A good time passer

BjPartridge B-Grader (?)

The first Men in Black movie, was very cool at the time of its release and loved every minute. The second one was pretty much a franchise destroyer. Which could be why we are having this third installment so long after the release of the second.

The plot revolves around time travel so it can sound convoluted but at it's essence is this. Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clement) has escaped his prison and wants to go back in time and kill agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) before he arrests his past self. Agent J (Will Smith) who is K's partner in modern times has to go back in time as well to try and make sure that Agent K does not die, and keep the time stream in check. Josh Brolin gives a fun performance as the younger Agent K.

There are many fun things to take notice of during the film, the celebrity aliens are always a bit of a giggle whilst the actor who plays Griffin is great as the comic relief. The aliens are also funny and disgusting in equal measure which is exactly what I hoped they would be. Boris the Animal is a very interesting character. similar in a way to the Vincent D'Onofrio character in the first movie. It makes you think that Sonnenfeld had a very disturbing experience with a Russian Doll as a child. The climax at Cape Kennedy is very enjoyable, with a nice little twist.

There are many things that you could criticise this film about, however it does not pretend to be high art, all it wants is to give you laughs and surprise you with some inventive character design. In short I had fun watching this movie, and chances are if you let it, you will as well.

Between Smith, Brolin and Stuhlbarg, the film manages to get past its ramshackle story and sometimes surprisingly-shoddy CGI. Full review.

Hollywood Reporter

Easily erases the second installment's vague but unpleasant memory and -- though we might hope producers will quit while they're ahead -- paves the way for future installments. Full review.

Time Out New York

You do sense, though, that the people behind MIB3 (mainly veteran producer Walter F. Parkes and script doctor David Koepp) were smart enough to let the audience grow up a bit, enough to get the Andy Warhol jokes and one brilliantly weird creation, a delicate alien who can see every outcome at once. Total Film (UK)

In a summer hardly starved of comic-book properties, this redundant extension of a series that ran out of gas a decade ago doesn't need a neuralyzer to be forgettable. Full review.

In this age of blockbuster bloat, Sonnenfeld's willingness to wrap things up well before the two-hour mark, as well as his eschewal of sledgehammer product placement, count as gestures of considerable mercy. Full review.
