It's closer thank you think.

The Paranormal Activity series returns to a contemporary setting and another house of unwitting victims who go about documenting creepy goings-on. This time it's a teenage girl and her Skype boy pal who are convinced strange things are happening involving her younger brother and his odd new friend. More

The directors of Catfish and Paranormal Activity 3 return with this fourth instalment to the horror found-footage franchise which picks up five years after PA2. Teenager Alex (Kathryn Newton) and her boyfriend Ben (Matt Shively) keep in touch with their phones and over Skype, both devices document the occult events that start when Katie (Katie Featherston from the other PA films) and her little boy move in across the street. Soon Alex's house is rigged with hidden cameras and an X-Box Kinect that combine to capture another batch of increasingly paranormal activity. 'All the activity has lead to this'- enticing if not just for the fact that an end is in sight, they can only take this series so far.

    • Bryce

so cheap so good so scary cant wait

    • Tracey

They shouldn't have used the laptop camera cutting in/out, more frustrating than suspense building.

While the found footage format isn’t completely played out, we’ve now seen plenty of average examples in the horror genre. Many take their cues from the Paranormal Activity films, which makes it all the more remarkable that the series has maintained audience interest over so many instalments. More

Two inspired decisions elevated the third, and previous, film - hiring the guys behind Catfish to make it, and them bolting a camera to a fan, showing that studio strategy and relatively minor filmmaking decisions can both impact on the outcome. Their return for Paranormal Activity 4 had me more interested than I would usually be for a third sequel in a horror franchise, but unfortunately their sense of what makes the PA films such effective vehicles for scares is absent here.

Despite devoting more time to the surveillance-based filming that made the earlier films such uncomfortably voyeuristic and reality-based, and featuring protagonists with much better reasons for documenting the minutiae of their lives on video (duh, they’re teenagers) PA4 sadly falls flat.

Where the other films create scares through tried-and-true haunted house tricks – loud noises and boo scares made more effective through anxiety-inducing suspense – these unfortunately don’t prove as effective here. Whether a resistance to these techniques has built up over the course of four films, or this is a directorial misstep is hard to say. But with the scares not big or frequent enough and a pretty ridiculous ending, this is a disappointing addition to the franchise. Hide

Pedalling - just pedalling

Zac-Young A-Lister (?)

I'm slightly ashamed to admit that I really enjoyed the previous instalments of this franchise. They cleverly avoided the pitfalls of the dreaded sequels by offering something unexpected - they went backwards and BUILT upon the story by offering new information and thus furthering the story. It was great.

This film however, does nothing but pedal in place. It offers nothing new, offers no explanation and offers no insight into what the hell is going on. You'd think that it would rise above its predecessors and expand upon its scare factor at least... but no. All it leaves you with is a desire to know what the hell they did with the budget and when they'll subject us to the inevitable sequel.

Press Reviews

Total Film (UK)

Aside from the usual self-slamming doors and flying bodies, there are enough creepy kids and hiding knives to distract from a plot that’s increasingly mobile yet running on the spot. Full review.

Empire (UK)

Catfish pair Joost and Ariel Schulman keep the franchise firmly on track with a satisfyingly scary fourth instalment. Full review.

Hollywood Reporter

This once-innovative series rolls on without much regard for either plot or character development. Full review.

IGN (USA)

The film does deliver on scares, and at a time when so few Hollywood horrors succeed on that front, we should [be] grateful for the consistency of the Paranormal Activity films. Full review.

Los Angeles Times

This film's strong suit is that it finally feels contemporary. Full review.

Variety (USA)

Less reliant on slow-burn suspense and larded with fake-out jump scares, this is the first sequel in the series that fails to advance the overall mythology in any meaningful way. Full review.
