Amazing film on Parker and Hulme

Cinefan B-Grader (?)

I was surprised how much I liked this film. The Parker Hulme murder happened more than 50 years ago now; I'm guessing many people only know about it these days because of the movie Heavenly Creatures. Reflections of the Past is a great way to find out more: it offers a captivating and thought-provoking look at the case in which two teenagers murdered one of their mothers. Arguments have raged over the yeas as to whether the girls were lovers or friends, and whether the murder was fuelled partly by their rich fantasy life, or whether they were actually incredibly similar to so many other teenagers. Using a mixture of interviews and reconstruction, Alexander Roman has done an amazing job of stitching together different viewpoints on the girls and the case. The interviews include classmates, legal experts, and writers, amogn them Michelanne Forster, who researched the case for her play Daughters of Heaven. Definitely check it out!
