Star Trek

Star Trek

2009

Uber-nerd JJ Abrams (producer of Cloverfield, Lost, Alias) brings us back to the early days of Star Trek, when the Starship Enterprise had that new-car smell and Captain James T Kirk still had acne problems. With a fresh cast, including NZ’s Karl Urban and Simon Pegg as Scotty, this action-packed sci-fi epic reboots the franchise to the glory days of yore.

Story follows the maiden voyage of the USS Enterprise, and the new recruits' mission to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind. But aboard the ship is a bitter rivalry: James T Kirk (Chris Pine), is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy, whereas Spock (Zachary Quinto), was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger.

Flicks review

  • Boom. Star Trek is back. It’s action-packed, exciting, and visually spectacular – who would have thought that the dying sci-fi series could be resurrected into something this fun?

Director J.J. Abrams and his team have beaten preconceptions with this streamlined space epic, which will please long-term fans while entertaining newcomers. The film deftly balances amazing big scale spectacle (a thrilling skydive onto a drilling platform is a highlight) with character-based moments, adding plenty of humour, tension and even a hint of romance into the mix.

The film takes a while to get going after a noisy intro but once the crew take the bridge of the Enterprise it moves at warp speed, racing towards its conclusion so fast that the final battle is almost over before you know it. Visually, the film is '1960s meets Apple Store', captured with flare-heavy photography. Shame the budget doesn’t extend to the engine room scenes, which look like they were filmed overnight at a Fonterra factory.

The biggest surprise is NZ’s Karl Urban, who ditches his surly action-man routine to flex his humour and become a scene-stealer as Dr McCoy. Eric Bana’s Nero is a forgettable yet functional villain, a victim of a script burdened with too much set-up and not enough pay-off. But what a set-up! A Star Trek movie is now something worth looking forward to, and the sequel can’t come soon enough.

  • NOT DISAPPOINTED

     5

I'm a "trekkie" fan from way back in the days of the 1st TV Star Trek series. I was a little apprehensive about going to see this but was definitely NOT disappointed. Storyline, humour, action....GREAT!!! The characters were well played and I look forward to the sequel.

This is the best movie I have seen this year so far. For Trekkie fans and non-Trekkie fans alike, DON'T MISS IT!

  • Not as geeky as expected

     5

Given the obvious association with geek culture and the running time of over 2 hours, I was naturally apprehensive as I ventured into the cinema.

As it turned out, however, Star Trek was a pleasantly easy watch, a good mix of (visually incredible) action and dialogue. Even more of a surprise was the element of humour that lightened potentially serious scenes, primarily courtesy of Simon Pegg.

Worried it'll be geeky and long? Don't be! The plot flows nicely and the well placed laughs will keep your attention.

  • Memories of Star Trek - We dedicate this movie to our Father

     5

I grow up with Star Trek and became a big Star Trek fan, a long with the rest of our house whole, because we didn't have a choice back then since it was the only TV channel playing on TV and is was in Black and White. Out Father was the biggest fan ever, he not only watch the program and the movies that came out between the 80's and 90's but also had the paper back books.

Our Father passed away almost 12 years ago and my sister and I tried so hard to get Red Carpet tickets to attend the big day but lucked out.
Anyway we were happy to go to the opening of the Star Trek movie on May 7th as this was our Fathers birthday and to celebrate his birthday at the remake of the Star Trek movie was just as good.

We know if he was still alive he would love this movie because we did.

So a big, big, big thumbs up to J.J. and all the cast and crew.

  • They gave it all they've got Captain!

     5

This is an utterly breathless addition to the Star Trek franchise, and takes it up a serious notch by eclipsing every other Star Trek movie for excitement, adrenaline, characterisation and special effects.

The young actors are spot on, especially Chris Pine as the swaggering, recklessly talented Kirk. A superb storyline throws the cat amongst the Trek universe pigeons, but it's the Kirk and Spock sub-plot that adds depth to the movie as they work their way to awkward comradeship.

It's the best action/sci-fi movie since Children of Men, and I'd even put it a notch up on the two Batman movies released this decade.

  • In space no one can hear you scream ... "Awesome"!

     5

I no Trekkie fan, but after witnessing this film I'm converted. JJ does it again with a great re-envisioning of the sci fi classic. Cool characters and effects...with more than enough "Trek" classic one liners to keep a smirk on your face.A great ride that unfortunately has to come to an end. Roll on part 2....

  • Bring on number 2

     4

Definitely my favourite for the year. Karl Urban blazes the screen with his performance as "Bones." It has the high octane action of Casino Royale with the wit and laughs of In Bruges (sans gore of course). Leonard Nimoy's cameo tips a nice nod in the direction of the original series and Simon Peg adds a thicker coat of comedy to the Scotty character of old.

It's hard to find anything not to like in this film. While Andrew's points studiously pick out any flaws that may have shone through this epic feature, I can't help but gloss over them as each little flash-back brings a smile to my face - two days on.

    High fives all-round I say.

Don't let your desire for character development/emotional transformations get in the way of great Spaceships vrs Spaceship action.

James Bond and Transformers have likewise been updated to less latex and more kungfu, big guns, bleeding hero action flicks such as this.

40yr old mummys of two (like myself) definitely go see!

    btw: I'm not a trekkie

  • Are you out of your Vulcan mind?

     5

Loved it. I'm a Trekkie fan of all the genres and loved the fact that JJ got actors who looked like Shatner et al when they were young and they nailed the character key notes without going overboard. The only exception was Uhura's character - nothing like the original from any angle - purely there for eye candy for the boys. which worked I think.

Ok i almost wet myself to hear that a new Star Trek was coming out minus Capt Picard and the original Kirk. Just love the new complex mommas boy Spock and the grimy look of future earth where there are still punchups in bars and people actually bleed. live long and prosper,

This is so what the new Star Trek is. Funny, countless chases, amazing looking and very dramatic. I don't know what JJ Abahms did to but I'll be cueing for the next one (and there was a little bit of sex/swearing in it that made it modern/incredibly watchable)

  • Mark is wrong! This is a good film!

     5

Mark, this Star Trek is not a film to be dissected except perhaps in film studies. Also it is a 'film' not a depiction of real life. I'm sorry that you cant understand this given that you are from the '24th century'.

    Cheers :D

  • Action packed and funny

     5

This film is totally worth seeing even, even if you were never into Star Trek.

While its action packed, funny, sexy and packed with awesome visual scenes, it actually manages some character development and thinks...

JJ Abrams has to be one of smartest people in hollywood at the moment and has chance to be one of the great directors of this time... imho.

  • The humour really was the strong point of this great movie

     5

I am a bit of a Trekkie so I have give it 5 stars, I was not overly keen on Kirk's role and his script but it still worked.
Have to say a big well done Simon Pegg(Scotty)I think he really made a big contribution to the humour and overall entertainment value of this movie.

  • Best movie made since Batman

     5

I go to the cinema quite alot and I get to see some good movies and some not so good, most movies are entertaining but forgetable this movie is really one to remember.
I actually found the humour really really funny and the acting was above and beyond which I am sure this is one thing people could not disagree with.
Every movie can be picked apart and critcized and I agree the movie has it weak points but I am not going to do that I only see the bigger picture on a whole it is fantasic movie.

  • Recycling, black holes, and toast

     3

I wanted to give this 2 stars because it is so disappointing, and I'm not a Trekkie. It is still a very watchable movie but is no masterpiece. My children who saw it (ages 10-17) enjoyed it though they knew almost nothing about Star Trek beforehand. I was not so fortunate.

I now realise that I've under-rated the original TV series and the excellent trailer that convinced me to see the movie. The former for the relationship between Kirk and Spock and the latter for a sense of grandeur largely missing from the movie.

Three things stood out for me:

    1. Recycling
Recycled sets - The late 20th Century sets don't match the 24th Century setting. I've worked in factories with the same gantries, machines, loud speakers, light switches, doors, etc.
Recycled movies - It is hard to avoid reminding us of Star Wars but it doesn't look like they even tried.
Recycled cosmology - I read it several reviews that this movie revitalises the Star Trek franchise. Unfortunately, the movie I saw is stuck in a 1960s time warp with no 21st Century vision of the future. For example, more recent scientific discoveries show us that you can't just find spare livable planets.
Recycled technology - Unlike The Dark Knight, the technology makes no significant advance since the 1960s : the control deck continues to use the outdated cliches: the computers are dumber than ours; people still walk/run around the massive ship; the ship defences are unable to hit torpedoes, that is, unless the script requires it, ....

    2. Black holes
The movie is full of black holes - dense masses that don't give out light:
    - Kirk is an unconvincing and too obviously contrived character who largely fails to spark with Spock. Where's the wit and irony of the earlier models.
    - The bad guy is very lame.
    - The romantic rivalry has no spark.
    - The script lacks wit - there was hardly a laugh in the theatre - which leads me to my last comment.

    3. Toast
The movie has boorish roles and uninspired conversations. People say stupid things and then, usually if they're not a major role, they die. A surprise highlight of the movie was when a minor jock is toasted - literally.

     4

WOW! Ill start by saying that was basically the SciFi equivalent of what the dark knight was for the Superhero movie genre!

A fantastically made film with excellent acting and some amazing landscapes! Also some really funny bits from the likes of Simon Pegg and John Cho!

Definatly Check it out in cinemas, it will be oh sho much better on the big screen!
