Kiwi comedy-drama about a rural pastor who attempts to convert an inner-city nightclub into a church. More

"A shepherd without a flock, Pastor Luke (ANgus Benfield) struggles to attract a single congregant to his rural services. Moving to the city in search of work, he meets feisty musician, Kate (Victoria Abbott), and her brother, Simon (Jeremy Brennan), a debt-ridden nightclub owner whom he revives from a near-fatal overdose. Inspired by this ‘miracle’, Simon wants to transform his nightclub into a church, using Luke as its preacher. But the city's criminals are not so pleased with the dwindling levels of vice on the streets. Bowing to underworld pressure, Simon betrays Luke, delivering him into the hands of arch-crime boss, Mr Rothschild." (Official Synopsis) Hide

Rebecca Barry Hill Flicks Writer

"I'm surrounded by the Osmonds," says Mark Hadlow's character Wally during this meek New Zealand film. It may not sound very Christian but it’ll be a miracle if this finds a rapturous audience. The characters in this feature from local filmmaker Patrick Gillies need saving from something; unfortunately it’s not evil, it’s the script. More

The problems start with the baffling idea that a small-town pastor can save a debt-ridden Christchurch nightclub (which looks to be pretty popular), by transforming it into a church. Yet far from visions of a Brian Tamaki type inspiring generous tithes, we get scenes of the local down-and-outers turning to the Bible. This might be convincing if the bumbling Pastor Luke (played by the film’s Aussie writer, Angus Benfield), actually gave a decent sermon. But he can barely deliver a chat-up line. Watching him woo musician Kate (a luminous Victoria Abbott) is like sitting in on a Christian version of The Office. Elsewhere, the scenes lack tension, and the film relies on hackneyed Hollywood devices and artificial means to stir emotion: when rousing music starts up, you know it’s the beginning of another montage.

Benfield does his best to poke fun at himself (as does Simon Bennett as a flashy tele-evangelist) but the massive narrative leaps do the film no favours. Perhaps it’s de rigueur in spiritually inclined movies not to show the romance in a love story, but I wasn’t even aware a relationship existed until things started to allegedly fall apart. Hide

Press Reviews

NZ Catholic Newspaper (Nevil Gibson)

Director Patrick Gillies has chosen a strong soundtrack that will be familiar to Parachute fans while the shortcomings of the low budget are offset by its heavy Kiwi flavour. .

The Christchurch Press (James Croot)

...the real stars of this genial crowdpleaser are Benfield's bumbling, bumpkin Bible-basher and the multi-talented Abbott. From him taking confessions in the nightclub toilets to her Britney Spears-esque debut video, there are plenty of lightly comic highlights to enjoy. .
