Filled with humour and great acting. Awesome.
I am not a fan of Westerns but I really enjoyed this film. There was action, shootouts, comedy and a lot of drama. It was fast paced and kept you interested and the characters were likable. Very good movie!!
A great flick. Classic Coen Bros. Slowly build up to a finale of epic proportions. It had it all, drama, action and comedy. This film will will definitely rake in a handful of Oscars.
James Brolin and newcomer Hailee Steinfield were both excellent - lots of funny bits too. True to Coen style. Thanks Flicks :)
I loved this movie! Pure Coen brothers awesomeness :) Those boys really know how to add humour to a serious-themed movie.
Excellent acting too, esp the actress who played the 14 year old.
What more can you ask for?
Really enjoyed the movie. Not really a western fan but this had great moments of humour. Nice to see a young female let that is more than one dimensional.
This movie ROCKED! :D I hate westerns but this movie just... was amazing. Bridges was amazing in it.
True Grit was good. I enjoyed the sayings, the story, the characters, old time language and it was surprisingly funny - I especially enjoyed the mocking banter between US Marshall Jeff Bridges & Texas Ranger Matt Damon (although I couldn't take him seriously with that facial hair). I would recommend it but I had high expectations and they didn't quite fulfil them. I am waiting for a Western to blow my mind. I also didn't think the very end part was necessary. Over all 4/5. Good but not great. Kings Speech will get the oscar over this one I think.
i thought Damon and Bridges were both better than Glen Campbell and John Wayne in the earlier version.
Not sure that Jeff B will get a 2nd oscar in a row - would be seen as greedy - but i tihnk he does a better job than Colin firth in 'kings speech'.
beautifully shot movie, just like 'o brother' afew scenes [usually the sweeping western vistas] were a little drawn out for a modern film
the dry humour made it
Loved the movie, characters were all really great. Awesome writing/dialogue etc. Epilogue left a little sour taste in my mouth, just felt a little hollow after establishing all the characters and having a pretty tense ending... that epilogue bit just fell a bit flat for me.
ok so Im biased. I love everything these guys do and true Grit is no exception. Superb acting and young Hailee is a revelation.
While Jeff Bridges was fantastic (as usual) Hailee Steinfield did an incredible job of portraying Mattie Ross and stole the show. Despite being a little slow at times I really enjoyed this movie and felt that it built up to the end perfectly. I wasn't expecting the humour, which was a pleasant surprise. All round worth the watch!
Great acting, fantastic movie! Go and see it.
I was particularly struck by the humour and perfect delivery of what could read as stilted dialogue, but which played out as natural and off beat funny. What wonderful complex characters and casting, I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
I was not expecting this to be as gripping as the John Wayne orginal, but I was blown away by the realism, the storyline and the acting. What a fantastic way to spend a couple of hours!
This movie made me want to run out of the movie theatre and do a freeze frame air punch! The script is fantastic and although i found myself laughing just as much as any comedy it never felt as if it was played for laughs. Hailee Steinfeld was beyond her years in talent and Matt Damon was incredibly funny. I was enthralled right from the start. 5 stars for sure
BRILLIANT MOVIE
I loved this movie, the characters especially the main actress. Def, western movies of old; this film had it all -humour, spirited characters and drawls... ha ha
This is one of the best westerns I have ever seen, its exactly what it says...... True Grit! The actor's were fantastic, Jeff Bridges - remarkable as usual, James Brolin - never lets you down and the up and coming Hailee Steinfield - WOW! she is going to go far that mixed with a great story..... what a night out.
Would happily go to the big screen to see it again.
The language was great the acting was fun. The humour cutting and clever. Movies should take you for the ride and I felt like I was in the saddle for every minute of this ride. I like the characters main and small parts all weaving a tale. It's gotta stand up as one of the great westerns. Only one more wish perhaps a Morriconesque soundtrack...but hey you don't always get all you want in life.
The language. I don't remember hearing one swear word. Kind of makes me think of how lame our language has become. I am lost for words.
You must see this movie. If you got Grit!
The acting, the scenery, the humour and story all came together to make an enjoyable night out. Jeff Bridges was fantastic, and there are big things in store for the young actress who held her own in the company of Bridges and Damon.
All I can say is give this movie a chance, its got some good humour and action.
Not usually a fan of Westerns but Joel and Ethan do it again. Great story brilliantly told and the wild west has never looked so beautiful. Definitely worth a watch on the big screen.
not too much may happen, but this film really builds upon the characters stories and what they have to say.
Past Coen Brothers' films I have been technically brilliant, but just plain boring. This was consistently interesting, brilliantly acted and overall an enjoyable ride, albeit a slow, leisurely one.
An enjoyable flick. Hailee Steinfield is a star in the making and her witty banter and interactions with the Bridges and Damon throughout the movie is a highlight. Stunning scenery too.
I'm not a Western fan at all but this movie was fantastic! The acting of Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfield was supurb as was the humour! I could watch this again! Another great Coen Brothers movie.
The return of the western is a welcomed one, littered with action and witty dialogue. I would definitely recommend this to others. The revelation of Hailee Steinfeld on this film was special. She held her own with other establish actors, Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon.
Loved the humour and great acting. Only downer, for me, was not being able to understand Jeff Bridges' every word. Could've just been the cowboy drawl?
Loved it! Jeff Bridges was outstanding...he's gotta be up for the big awards after that performance ;)
Great Flick. Go see it.
Wonderful photography and great acting. Would not have recognised Mat Damon. Demonstrated the brutality of the era and not the romance which was often the case in old movies.
excellent movie and played with such passion by the leads. top movie of the year so far.
.... I am really glad I did not read all the rave reviews here before I went to this film tonight, or I might have been even more disappointed and given it two stars.
It got three stars from me on the strength of the newcomer Hailee who did indeed dominate the story and steal the show. Bravo for her.
But the other bits all let me down, including what should have been the climax, the 'bit in the teeth' scene toward the end. Maybe I am spoiled by John Wayne but I did believe it in that first movie. I didn't believe it here, thanks for trying though, Jeff.
And humour? Nobody was lol in the theatre I sat in, and that is telling.
I guess for me it is true - when it comes to Westerns, 'they don't make 'em like they used to.'
Wait for the DVD at your Library.
Funny and moving. Great script and great acting. Take a bow Hailee! Not bad for a 14y/o.
It's a long time since I've seen a Western and I found this entertaining but not riveting. Good acting, especially from the 14 year old female lead, but Jeff Bridge's grumble-speak was sometimes a bit difficult to translate.
The best thing about this movie was the young girl. She was great to watch such a powerful young women standing up for and doing what she believes in. even if that is to kill her dads killer. I thought it was a bit slow though
The Coen brothers activate their wonder twin powers to remake the John Wayne classic True Grit by reuniting with Jeff Bridges, almighty God of acting for whom we must give our thanks. Additionally, they hired a sizable bag of marbles to shove in his mouth. He seems to spit them out one by one as the movie goes on, but don’t be surprised if you miss some dialog in the beginning. Hailee Steinfeld, along with the rest of the cast, gives an exceptional performance. However, the slow pace dampened numerous scenes that were less exciting than they should have been.
Finally, a Coen movie that has an ending! All the 5-star reviews pretty much sum up how awesome it is, but google TRUE GRIT WITH SUBTITLES. You will piss yourself, just quietly. Enjoy!
This is a film about Mattie Ross played in a star making performance by Hallie Steinfeld who enlists Rooster Cogburn played by Jeff Bridges to help her track down Tom Chaney played by Josh Brolin who killed her father. So go of on the quest to find Chaney they also get help from a texas ranger played by Matt Damon. This is a solid film by the Coen brothers and a solid performances by Bridges and an outstanding performance from young Hallie Steinfeld.
"True Grit" is an over-rated, one-dimensional movie that doesn't live up to the hype. Jeff Bridges does a great job as Rooster Cogburn (if only you could understand what he is saying, his performance would rate even higher -- see below). ... A children's adventure movie perhaps, but maybe too violent for that genre. Shades of Cat Ballou in places -- indeed, one of the Loafers thought the movie was a spoof of westerns!
I went and saw this with 6 guys.. altough some parts of the movie were decent we found ourselves struggling to stay awake..
The true grit remake didn't quite do it for me. Ok, but not special. Am I missing something?
So funny and perfectly cast. I'm seeing it again.
This movie deserves all the accolades it gets at the upcoming Oscars. Jeff Bridges plays his role perfectly and truly shoows what a class actor he is. Was a little disappointed in Matt Damons role I felt it need a little more depth but overall the movie itself was brilliant.
The Cohen Brothers use of language is just outstanding - easily best flick of the lot at the moment. Matt Damon - pitch perfect in a very funny role.
i was bored, very slow movie and no classic shoot downs or anything, thought the ending was kind of stupid as well
Damn good film. Has that Cohen sense of humor, Deacons shot it very beautifully as per normal. Really enjoyable sit down and turn off your brain film. It's a narative. With a Cohen touch and a Cohen finish. Not for everyone, defiantly for me.
A good solid outing from the Coens. Bridges is great and perfectly cast. Damon acts with a mustache. And the little sister damn near steals the show. But..and its a big but...the original was better. John Wayne owns that role.So the Dude gets an Oscar nod (& rightly so) but hats off (and by happy coincidence it was to be his Oscar) to the Duke.
I went in with some pretty low expectations off the back of some bad experiences with the Coen brothers but I had watched the trailers, heard some of the hype and was hopeful.
Well I wasnt disappointed. Good movie, solid storyline and all that.
Thanks
I don't understand all these comments about it not being great. I have recommended this to so many people. I wasn't expecting anything from it and it was so entertaining, wonderful performances, memorable dialogue. The weak point I think is the ending carries on a little too long.
I even thought Matt Damon did a great job.
I would love to have a second viewing of this movie as I am sure I missed quite a bit simply because of the heavy accents. What I did catch was thoroughy enjoyable truely drole wit. True Grit was not like the old westerns I saw as a kid - can't recall a single one with a fourteen year old girl as the protagonist; and in true pc form, not an Indian was to be seen, or a train for that matter! I guess I'd call this an arty western - beautiful scenery, clever dialogue and definitely one to see.
Never saw the John Wayne original (before my time) but enjoyed this Coen cover of a classic. The star in this was feisty 14 year old Mattie Ross played by Hailee Steinfeld. She stood up to Marshall Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) and Texan Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon) in her personal quest for justice. Mattie didn't fit with social expectations of her gender in an era when girls weren't supposed to worry "their pretty little heads" about hunting felons and settling estates. She showed wit, gumption and grit. Jeff Bridges was authentic as the gruff alcoholic Marshall, slurring and growling half the time (or maybe it was his accent?) and I liked Matt Damon in this arty role compared to his usual blockbuster fare. True Grit is like a shiny gem in a snake pit, an unexpected find and morality tale with some haunting music and imagery. Contrary to cynics, I liked the melancholic dirge by Iris Dement in the end: "Leaning In Everlasting Arms." Reminded me of the folk country songs in O Brother Where Thou Art.
Good Cohen bros flick which I enjoyed. Thought the acting was very good.
However, I hate movies that the preview for it tells the whole story and this was the case with this movie!
Easily the best film of the year so far, and it will be difficult to beat. Hilarious, moving and epic, all film makers should aspire to be as good as the Coens prove themselves to be here. Stunningly good movie.
Great script. Great actors - in particular Jeff Bridges. Yes it is quite different from the westerns you may have grown up with, but then what would you expect from the Coen brothers? If you are a big fan of the original with John Wayne this may not appeal, but this version is actually closer to the book and I for one thoroughly enjoyed it.
Given the rave reviews I had relatively high expectations going in, and wasn't disappointed. Very well cast and written, with a perfect balance of humour, action and dark scenes to make you laugh, jump in your seat and even cry a little at the end. It was a real struggle to make out some of Jeff Bridges' dialogue at times, but the character of Mattie Ross was brilliantly well-faceted. As for the ending, I thought it was entirely appropriate - anything different would have been a cop-out! Highly recommended.
Never been a fan of the old westerns but rented this on the reviews of others. The story based around a young girl seeking revenge for her fathers death hires a drunk Mr Cogburn andthe incredibly bumbling LaBeouf the young girl who plays the part Im sure will have a very long acting career A briilaint young actress the only gripe i had was about the ending i just wish they had tyed up some of those loose ends when you watch it youll see what i mean if you like this I would also recommend 3.10 to yuma another very good western
Pretty landscapes and a standout performance from young Hailee Steinfeld, but lacks the flare and depth of the Coen's better movies. An excellent Jeff Bridges and a couple of the Coens' black comic touches raise it above the ordinary ... just. Jeff Bridges' beard deserves an acting credit.
The Coen Brothers rock. TRUE GRIT is a wonderful homage to the Wild West, and Jeff Bridges is superb. Working again with cinematographer, Roger Deakins, the landscapes are pure Western genre heaven. Why only 4 stars? Well, because in the modern Western genre you're up against Clint Eastwood's UNFORGIVEN and THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES and Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST and THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY - that said, the Coen's are easily in that class. Way at the top of the class. And, special bonus, Matt Damon is not annoying! Amazing (for anything not Jason Bourne)! Seriously - see it, if only for Hailee Steinfield as young teen Mattie Ross - she's outstanding!
