Avatar Breaks Titanic's World Record

James Cameron's Avatar has finally passed his own Titanic (1997) to become the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide.
While final figures aren't available yet, Monday's earnings were expected to be around $US 15 million, which would put Avatar, previously on around $1.838 billion following its sixth weekend run at the top of the charts, past Titanic's record $1.84 billion haul.
And people seem to be seeing it in 3D, as intended. At least 65% of Avatar's overseas boxoffice and nearly 80% of its domestic earnings derive from 3D venues.
This is a crucial factor in the box-office takings, as tickets to 3D sessions are more expensive than regular ones. The actual amount of tickets sold is being kept secret for now.
Adjusted for inflation, the film currently sits as the 26th highest domestic grosser of all time - sandwiched between 1978 musical Grease and 1965 James Bond film Thunderball.
