BOX OFFICE: Sex sells

BOX OFFICE: Sex sells

Variety reports that Sex and the City’s massive opening weekend makes it the best-ever for an American R-rated comedy, and the 5th best opening ever for any R-rated film. It over took Indiana Jones 4, taking in $US55.7 million, to Indy’s $US46 million.

This bodes very well for romantic comedy fans (expect a landfall). 85% of viewers, on the film's first Friday, were female. 80% of them were over 25 years old.

Sex and the City opens in NZ today (click HERE for more, or HERE for the trailer).

NZ BOX OFFICE
Indy 4 reigned supreme over last weekend, it’s NZ takings now totaling $NZ 3.5 million. True-story 21 opened at number 2, and Iron Man fell to number 3 (it’s now taken a total $3.3 million here). Kiwi comedy Second-Hand Wedding is number 4 – continuing its super run. It’s brought in $725,000 so far. This is great news – a solid sign that we’re increasingly up for more local content on the big screen. Though, sadly, local feature The Last Magic Show (which opened last Thursday) failed to make the top 20.
