Brian Cox is said to be "a major contender" to play a dwarf in Guillermo del Toro's upcoming film adaptation of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit says AICN's down-under correspondent.
The story follows Bilbo Baggins (whose casting is yet to announced, although we vote for Michael Sheen) as he first encounters Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) and is somewhat unwillingly swept off on an adventure to the lonely mountain to rid it of the dragon, Smaug.
The dragon is guarding a treasure of enormous value that he had firstly taken from the dwarves who once lived there. A major skirmish, The Battle of Five Armies, ensues.
There are thirteen dwarf characters featured in The Hobbit: Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin (Gimli's dad), Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, Ori, and the main one being Thorin Oakenshield, whom Cox would likely play.
Meanwhile, John Rhys Davis (who played Gimli in the Lord of the Rings trilogy) has stated that he will not be returning. The prothesthetic makeup was too harsh on his sensitive skin last time. True story.
The film is scheduled to hit theatres in November 2011.
