EVENT's Retro Showcase Season
Movies that make up the very fabric of cinema are returning for a curtain call in EVENT Cinema’s Retro Showcase beginning 1 March.
The initial Retro Showcase will run for a generous 13 weeks until 26 June (13 films, over 17 weeks from March 1 to June 26, school holidays excluded) with a nostalgic price tag of just $10 for adults or students and $6.00 for seniors and children. The season includes titles such as Singing in the Rain, Rocky, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Black Narcissus.
EVENT’s Programming Executive, Andy Miller, says, presenting a season like this is the beauty of being a company that owns silver screens.
“People have always been driven to theatres for cinema with a capital C and we want to bring back some of the gems and magic that people remember, the classics, the movies they can take their mums to or introduce their kids to on the big screen. These movies are the reason people love cinema, and for many the Retro Showcase is going to be their first chance to experience these amazing movies on a the big screen.”
Miller says hits from the 1980s as well as older classics will feature.
“We’ll be showcasing both original '80s family hits Labyrinth and Muppets Take Manhattan, which is enjoying a renaissance right now with a recent Muppets movie featuring New Zealand’s own songwriter Bret McKenzie. Classics that never go out of style are also high on our billing, including Dr. No, Gone With the Wind and West Side Story.
The movies, which will be presented for the first time in New Zealand using the latest in pristine digital projection and silver screens, will be shown at EVENT Cinemas in Queen St, Embassy (Wellington), Albany, Newmarket, Highland Park, Westcity, Westgate, Chartwell (Hamilton). They will rotate through the centres showing every Sunday and will be repeated again on a Monday evening and Thursday morning.
