Sam Worthington, a hot name following the massive success of Avatar, is in negotiations to star in Dracula Year Zero, a period vampire epic Alex Proyas (Knowing, I, Robot, Dark City) is set to direct for Universal, reports Latino Review.
The script explores the origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler. It seeks to depict Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war.
This spin on the story has the young prince leading the charge to fend off the Ottoman Empire's attempts to use Romania as a foothold to conquer the rest of Europe.
In a moment of desperation, he ascends a mountain where a dark magical power resides in the hope of finding something to keep the Turkish hordes at bay. That power helps him defeat the Turks, but comes at the price of him changing into a creature of the night.
Universal seem keen to revive their old classic horror characters. The Wolfman, starring Benicio del Toro opens on February 11.
While Worthington will be seen in the Helen Mirren thriller The Debt, his next role is Greek hero Perseus in Clash of the Titans.
