Twilight heartthrob Taylor Lautner has been officially confirmed to play the title character in Stretch Armstrong 3D.

Stretch Armstrong is a toy first released in 1976, which had really stretchy arms and legs. The doll was re-issued in the 1990s with a canine sidekick, Fetch Armstrong. He also has an evil brother named Evil X-ray Wretch Armstrong who has a skull face.

The film itself, based on a script by Steve Oedekerk (Bruce Almighty), sees a straight-laced spy stumble upon a stretching formula that allows him to fight crime more effectively even if it impacts his personal life.

It will be released in 2012, later than estimated but done to give the filmmakers time to "shape the project into a 3-D superhero adventure and to accommodate Lautner's existing commitments" according to a press release.

Universal co-chairman Donna Langley says "In the past two years, Taylor has emerged as a real star at the global box office. He brings the perfect balance of energy and athleticism to the role of an unlikely super hero with a fantastic super power. We couldn't be more pleased that he has agreed to be our Stretch."
