This morning the nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards were announced (the big night is on March 7).

Leading the pack are James Cameron's Avatar and war zone thriller The Hurt Locker (directed by Cameron's ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, due for release here later in 2010), with nine nominations each.

And what of the Kiwi contingent? There are nine of us folk... mainly in the technical categories (Sound, Special Effects) where WETA Workshop were involved for Avatar and District 9. While Peter Jackson gets a nod for producing District 9, his Lovely Bones misses out aside from a Supporting Actor nomination (for Stanley Tucci). The people's comments

OMG i so agree with Sarah! New Moon should be nominated, but I suppose it was mostly adults or guys that voted, but yea, it should be nominated 4 something, oh well, at least Kristen Stewart's nominated 4 a Bafta 4 New Moon! Hope she gets it!

i love going to the movies but i hate that we are so far behind i saw the hurt locker almost 6 months ago. I am definitely going to see it at the movies if it ever comes out here.

It would be nice if district 9 won something but i doubt it.

Why do people who review movies become so pompous. Streep has a brilliant career with many detailed and powerful performances. Sure you can dismiss anyone because others like them, if you want attention. The Oscar is mostly commercial and popular still it does recognize very good film making. It seems to me the mix of films, arty ,commercial etc is not so different from every other year, it merely reflects the taste of the time to some degree praises some good work. Relax, enjoy it.

Where in the heck is "New Moon" in all this? Why wasn't it nominated?

By Sarah

Come on, Dan and Murray - there are plenty of good, interesting films nominated here. District 9, The Hurt Locker, A Serious Man, Precious. Plus, I won't hear a bad word about Alec Baldwin.

By Jessica

Hear hear Murray Swann... the Oscars are nothing. Their picks are unoriginal and bland. They're very rarely at the forefront - picking influential or exiting films. Most notably for me this year - UP IN THE AIR. What rubbish!

By Dan

Hi Stacey. Unfortunately many are these are undated for NZ: HURT LOCKER, BLIND SIDE, THE LAST STATION and THE MESSENGER.

A SINGLE MAN is due out May 6th
CRAZY HEART is due out Feb 25th

Check out our coming soon page - it's the most comprehensive and up to date place to find release dates.

Cheers.

Have you included Finola Dwyer (producer, "An Education") in your list of 9 Kiwis amongst this year's Oscar nominations?
How about including the names for the sound & effects nominees, and highlighting the Kiwis throughout?

From the web:

FINOLA DWYER

Finola is a producer and the MD of Finola Dwyer Productions.

Finola’s background was as an editor. Since re-locating to the UK from New Zealand in the early 90’s, her producer credits have included Iain Softley's award-winning debut feature Backbeat, starring Stephen Dorff and Ian Hart; Stephan Elliott's cult favourite Welcome to Woop Woop; Chris Menges' The Lost Son, starring Daniel Auteuil and Nastassja Kinski; Sandra Goldbacher's BAFTA-nominated Me Without You, starring Anna Friel and Michelle Williams; Antonia Bird's EMMY-nominated TV film for C4/HBO The Hamburg Cell; and Stephen Woolley's feature debut Stoned, starring Leo Gregory and Paddy Considine. Finola most recently produced Tsunami: The Aftermath by Abi Morgan, for HBO/BBC, directed by Bharat Nalluri, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tim Roth, Sophie Okonedo and Toni Collette. Tsunami (broadcast worldwide in Nov/Dec 2006) was nominated for three Golden Globes. Finola is currently producing An Education by Nick Hornby and is developing Silverback with Pierce Brosnan’s company Irish Dream Time.

She has recently produced the theatre production of Elling whch opened at the Bush Theatre with John Simm in the lead role and transfers to the West End's Trafalgar Studios in July 2007.

The Oscars have become a mess. The nominations are fairly hohum...but with the amount of rubbish being made Im not surprised at the tack up for the awards. I mean Sandra Bullock????? this is a third rate actress if ever there was one. A few years back she couldnt even get a role in a movie! And Meryl Streep...yawn.And if the Nominations werent bad enough what about the Hosts??? They will be terrible. If you cant get Billy Crystal or Woophi Goldberg...then dont bother. People watch the Oscars for the glitz and glamour and to be entertained..and we hope to see alot of old Hollywood back....but I doubt it...Oscars 2010...another sad night!

I would LOVE to see a follow-up article focused on WHEN some of these nominated films will open in NZ such as HURT LOCKER, BLIND SIDE, A SINGLE MAN, CRAZY HEART, THE LAST STATION and THE MESSENGER.
