The Toronto International Film Festival wrapped up this week and announced this year's winners. TIFF's big prize, the People's Choice Award, went to Silver Linings Playbook, the latest film by David O. Russell (director of The Fighter) that stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Chris Tucker (his first role in five years). Here's the rest of this year's winners:
People's Choice Award (Documentary): Artifact (dir. Jared Leto)
People's Choice Award (Midnight Madness): Seven Psychopaths (dir. Martin McDonagh)
Best Canadian Feature Film: Laurence Anyways (dir. Xavier Dolan)
Best Canadian Short Film: Keep a Modest Head (dir. Deco Dawson)
Best Canadian First Feature Film: Antiviral (dir. Brandon Cronenberg) tied with Blackbird (dir. Jason Buxton)
FIPRESCI Discovery: Call Girl (dir. Mikael Marcimain)
FIPRESCI Special Presentations: In the House (dir. François Ozon)
Other films of note this year included Argo, Cloud Atlas, Mr. Pip, The Master and the Ant Timpson and Tim League-produced horror anthology The ABCs of Death - delightfully described by Spotlight Toronto as "an encyclopaedia of carnage with all manner of torture, sexual perversions, executions, crimes of passion and dystopian near-futures".
