MATT, EXPLAIN YOURSELF...

"I don't really know how to pin down what kind of movies I like. I don't mind the odd popcorn Hollywood time filler here and there, or comic book adaptions even (I used to be a bit of a comic nerd back in the day).

"If I'm with my girlfriend then we tend to watch something a bit 'smarter'. Though I have seen Pink Flamingos three times but she has yet to join me. We don't have a TV any more as nearly everything here is in German but there are a couple of good English language cinemas here we get to when I have a weekend off."

Moonrise Kingdom, Movie

Moonrise Kingdom

2012

In the summer of ’65 a small community searches for two runaway 12-year-old lovebirds.

"Well this is the last movie I saw so it's fresh in my memory. It's a Wes Anderson film so it's kind of kooky and Bill Murray does his 'Bill Murray being odd in a Wes Anderson movie' schtick, but the movie is so cute it's hard to hate on him for that. A great date flick, especially if it's a girl you recently became reacquainted with after not having seen each other since primary school."

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, Movie

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

1980

Space opera at its finest and the best sequel of all time. Why did you stuff everything up George?

"It's the best movie ever, but second on my list for obvious reasons. This is a movie that has it all, Hoth, Dagobah AND Bespin. Easily the best movie Irvin Kershner ever directed, and that's including Robocop 2. Anyone who rates Slave Girl Leia as hotter than Hoth Leia or Bespin Leia is a buffoon."

Let The Right One In, Movie

Let The Right One In

2008

A bullied Swedish 12-year-old befriends a vampire with melancholy and mayhem ensuing.

"A great film, and with more subtlety than most vampire entertainment these days (although I did love Near Dark back in the day). This makes this list as it opened me up to Scandinavian film and TV in general (have always liked their music though) and we have thoroughly enjoyed Forbrydelsen (The Killing) and The Bridge recently."

True Romance, Movie

True Romance

1993

Tarantino-scripted wild and wooly blend of action and dark comedy made by the director of 'Top Gun'.

"Although directed by a Scott (Tony - Ed), this is a Tarantino movie through and through. So many of my favourite all time actors (Hopper, Oldman, Pitt, Walken, Gandolfini) it's ridiculous, Tarantino's dialogue and true love.....what more could a movie want???? (lightsabers excluded)"

Before Sunrise, Movie

Before Sunrise

1995

Richard Linklater's romantic depiction of a chance meeting and night in Vienna.

"The movie that helped convince my girlfriend to come and live in Vienna, so has to make the list for its tourist brochure purposes alone. Ethan Hawke only made 2 other good films after this I think (the sequel, and Gattaca, which is also fantastic) and it was probably the peak of Julie Delpy's career as well. But Linklater lets the actors act and the two of them carry the movie all by themselves without much of a supporting cast apart from the sights and scenery of Vienna."
