Happiness (1998), Movie

Happiness (1998)

Black comedy doesn't get much more darker, taboo-breaking or hilarious than this not-for-the-faint-hearted Todd Solondz effort.

"One of my favourite movies of all time is Happiness by Todd Solondz. I was dying when I saw the film, I thought it was hysterical in a very dark way. I actually shot in his last film, Life During Wartime, and I had this amazing kind of rape scene with Paris Hilton but that part got cut out of the movie unfortunately."

"His new movie’s supposed to be really good too, which I’m super excited for: Dark Horse."

Waiting For Guffman (1996), Movie

Waiting For Guffman (1996)

This Is Spinal Tap's Christopher Guest revisits mockumentary improv with this tale of a small town theatre production.

"I love every second of it comedically, and it was maybe one of the first written comedies that inspired me to make stuff. I look back at that and how I was thinking 'wow, I’ve never seen anything like that'. It's the same thing as Happiness – just an very distinctive, funny, dry, amazing tone."

"No one was really doing stuff like that, in that documentary kind of way at that moment. It was a magical moment."

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Movie

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Stanley Kubrick's cosmic sci-fi masterpiece exploring history, evolution, consciousness, extra-terrestrials and trippiness.

"That was a major influential movie and also one of my favourites. I was really young when I saw it for the first time, I had a friend growing up in high school and his mom showed us all kinds of movies. She also showed us Caligula, which is crazy to show a teenager – I think that had a lot to do with the stuff I do now. She also showed us A Clockwork Orange. Lots of Stanley Kubrick stuff, early on."

"I didn’t really understand it until college, but I think watching it early shows you where a movie can go and how experimental you can get which is really cool."

Koyaanisqatsi (1982), Movie

Koyaanisqatsi (1982)

A visual spectacular using slow motion and time-lapse photography set to music to create poetry for your eyeballs.

"I wasn’t high when I saw this... My uncle showed me this when I was on tour in St Louis in a band and he was just like 'check this shit out' and everyone in my band had never seen anything like it. They were just floored and super-emotional and then I really got into Philip Glass’s music".

"I’ve seen Koyaanisqatsi live three times and it’s just the f*cking coolest thing. It just shows you how a very simple way of storytelling, where there’s no dialogue, is very powerful."

Antichrist (2009), Movie

Antichrist (2009)

Lars von Trier explores depression through full penetration, genital mutilation and raw emotional and psychological impact.

"I saw this in the theatre on opening night. My friend brought me leftovers, her mom’s a really good Italian cook. I was about to take a bite and then the opening scene happened and I basically held the fork the entire movie without eating it. Of course I lost my appetite."

"I’m really into an emotional experience kind of movie whether it be laughing or crying and yeah, this was it."
