We’ve partnered up with Hoyts Cinemas to poll cinema-loving Kiwis on the big questions that define our country’s tastes in movies. Last month’s poll was: Who is the best supervillain in movies? (i.e. who is the best antagonist in a superhero film?)
The resulting Top 10 is as follows, along with quotes from fellow Flicksters about why they voted for that film.
10. Ozymandis – Watchmen (2009)
“A supervillain whose plan succeeds.” – Steve B.
9. Dr. Octavius – Spider-Man 2 (2004)
“Heavily sympathetic villain that is fun to watch. His character helped create one of the greatest superhero movie of all time.” – Jeremiah N.
8. Lex Luthor – Superman (1978)
“Lex Luthor is a complex character, his pragmatic approach to business undermined by an eccentric fascination with Superman. Gene Hackman captures that split, without bordering into over-acting.” – Theodore M.
7. Penguin – Batman Returns (1992)
“He looks so scary and still gives me chills.” – Stephanie H.
6. Magneto – The X-Men series (2000 – 2016)
“This really was a really hard choice, but what swayed me in the end was the fact that its the same character, played brilliantly by two different actors.” – Chris B.
5. Bane – The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
“McBane from The Simpsons didn’t feature in the list, but Bane’s name is similar enough so I went with that.” – Chris P.
4. Syndrome – The Incredibles (2004)
“The fact that he was Mr incredible’s biggest fan then ended up turning evil makes him the best super villain.” – Jo-Maree L.
3. Loki – Thor / The Avengers (2011/2012)
“Loki is powerful but does not need to resort to brute force and instead plays the longer term intellectual game.” – Sian T.
2. The Joker – Batman (1989)
“This is one villian that I thought about for years. He made a real impression on me.” – Joanne G.
1. The Joker – The Dark Knight (2008)
“Heath Ledger personified the exact canon psyche of The Joker and his performance still withstands later reiterations of the character and puts most villains to shame.” – Rajeev P.
