Fan Of The Festival: Director Roseanne Liang

Roseanne Liang

Roseanne Liang is the Kiwi director behind documentary Banana in a Nutshell and its fictionalised companion, My Wedding and Other Secrets (which is available on DVD from July 20). We asked her a few questions about movie stuff, including her picks for the 2011 festival…

——————–

FLICKS: How are you and what have you been up to today?

LIANG: I am well. I started the first day of a director’s internship on a martial arts film in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is crazy. And sticky hot.

FLICKS: Describe your most memorable cinema experience.

I had pretended not to speak any English, just to get to see Pulp Fiction at the theatre (it was R18, I was 16). I remember loving the film, it was just so raw and different and awesome, but I spent the whole film in fear of cinema staff who would see me understanding everything, and figure out I was a liar!

FLICKS: What’s your favourite film scene?

Arrgh, so many! The sword fight in The Princess Bride. The scene between Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan in Coffee and Cigarettes, or Cate Blanchett with herself. The final monologue of Blade Runner (cliche much?). The opening scene of The Social Network – now that’s some way to set up a film.

FLICKS: What was the last great film you saw?

Well, the film polarised people but I have to say that Black Swan really got under my skin. I was thinking about it long after I’d seen it and, unlike some of Aronofsky’s other films, I found myself wanting to watch it again. I realised halfway through the film that I’d had my fists clenched the whole time. Not exactly a fun experience, but it was the work of a real auteur, a unique vision.

FLICKS: What are your two picks for the 2011 New Zealand International Film Festival?

Well, these are just my personal picks, maybe not the most worthy or cinematic films, but two I know I’ll really enjoy – The Future and Jiro Dreams of Sushi. because I have to see whether a cat voiceover can be pulled off, and because the pursuit of gastronomical perfection is always a good time.
