(500) Days of Summer

First-time director Marc Webb (helmer of music videos for Hot Hot Heat and My Chemical Romance) brings us this unconventional love story: Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t.

When Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a hapless greeting card copywriter and hopeless romantic, is blindsided after his girlfriend Summer (the brilliant and underrated Zooey Deschanel) dumps him. His mind shifts back and forth through various periods of their 500 days together to try to figure out where things went wrong.

This has got a killer soundtrack including The Smiths, Regina Spektor, Black Lips, Wolfmother and Simon & Garfunkel.

Boy gets girl and boy loses girl in convoluted, sometimes cloying but ultimately winning fashion in 500 Days of Summer.

Much like Annie Hall did for a previous generation, (500) Days of Summer may be the movie that best captures a contemporary romantic sensibility.

Gordon-Levitt soars and Deschanel charms in a playful, witty, disordered telling of a fractured romance. Bringing fresh zing to a genre prone to predictability, Webb crafts a (not-in-) love story about feeling bad that’s infectiously good.

Slight, charming and refreshingly candid little picture.

Here is a rare movie that begins by telling us how it will end and is about how the hero has no idea why.

The writing is often clever and the overall production playful and intelligent.

Perfectly played, simultaneously serious and light, endlessly inventive, this is a strong contender for the most original date movie of the year. (Terrific) stuff.

Joseph Gordon Levitt is definitely one of the best young actors today and I'm picking he will win oscars some time in the future. Here he plays a likable young man despite (or possibly because) he's a bit naive about love. Zooey Deschanel is the seductive Summer who doesn't believe in love and he tries to woo her. We know straight of it's not going to work...

Rented this one a while back has the young lad frm third rock from the son in it better than expected not a fan of the mono-toned Zooey Deschanel if you can get over her voice then its one to watch.

I loved this film to pieces. It takes the normal romantic comedy formula and turns it on its head. The non-linear storytelling is also very refreshing and well used.

What a great debut from a director! The plot line was simple and effective, and a superb rendition of how a lot of us blokes tend to pointlessly chase and fret over entirely the wrong woman. But it's the tightly woven interplay between the leads, the look, sound, and feel of the movie which embellishes it. Even the perfume of the woman sitting next to me...

This movie is not Romantic nor is it a Comedy. Cringe factor 99. For any girl who has been in a relationship with a pitiful clingy boyfriend, this is not pleasant. Yes, there are a few laughs and it may be enjoyable for the naive. If you have any sense of maturity in a relationship you will hate it.

I can only recommend this movie. It takes you through some pretty tough spots in a topsy-turvy relationship but it is all the closer-to-home for that. I appreciate that the movie is about the male lead and don't expect much from the female lead. Though Ms Deschanel delivers, a quirky and nuanced true-to-life female that in the end is entirely redeemable...

I recently saw this again and it was just as wonderful as the first time, despite the lack of a lively crowd accompanying it. Disclaimer regarding my previously posted review: My review was supposed to say Ingmar Bergman, obviously. I realised only recently that I had erroneously written Ingrid. I did know who I meant as I was referring to The Seventh...
