After Hours

Scorsese's paranoid, Kafka-esque black comedy following an office worker chump (Griffin Dunne) who - after meeting a girl in Soho, New York for a date - sinks into the worst night of his life. Now a cult classic, the film was a flop on release despite gaining positive reviews and Scorsese picking up Best Director at Cannes. The script was written by 26-year-old Joseph Minion while he was studying film at Columbia University.

Anxiety-ridden picture would have been pretty funny if it didn't play like a confirmation of everyone's worst fears about contemporary urban life.

Not, ultimately, a satisfying film, but it's often vigorously unsettling. In this season of homogenized pap, that should be read as praise.

This is the work of a master filmmaker who controls his effects so skillfully that I was drained by this film.

Martin Scorsese's take on NYC puts a hip spin on Joe Minion's cleverly constructed nightmare.
