Full reviewA small Brazilian town vanishes from most maps in this Cannes Palme d'Or-nominated feature from Kleber Mendonça Filho (Aquarius) and Juliano Dornelles.
"In the near future, in the small village of Bacurau, the people are in mourning at the loss of the matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. In his eulogy, her son says of her: 'In our family, we have everyone from bricklayers to scientists, businesspeople, teachers, gigolos and whores. But no thief was ever born out of her.' It serves as an apt description of the town too: a diverse group of people who share a sense of honour and pride. But all is not well in Bacurau. The water supply has been cut off through nefarious political deals, and now it appears that the village has vanished from most maps. The local mayor of the region visits to drum up support for his re-election, bearing dilapidated books and questionable medication, but is treated with contempt. Worse yet, unbeknownst to the people of Bacurau, not far away is a group of foreigners planning something extremely sinister." (Sydney Film Festival)

Full reviewA visually impressive but unevenly paced thriller that feels as if it's meant to be analysed more than enjoyed, and for which footnotes might actually have done more good than subtitles.
Full reviewThe combination of satire and savagery is pretty fierce and intriguingly unique.
Full reviewIt is an utterly distinctive film-making, executed with ruthless clarity and force.
Full reviewPropulsive storytelling doesn't come at the expense of the vividly sketched personality of the community, although there are a couple of key characters who might have warranted a little more fleshing out.
Full reviewIt's quite a brew, rich and extremely filling, but also chunky and uneven; it leaves your stomach in knots and your head in a very strange place.
Full reviewThough handsome in style and admirable in ambition, this sprawling neo-western never comes together as a satisfying whole.
