Barbara (2017)

Portrait on French singer Barbara, told with a twist. The Guardian describes it best as "a mega-meta, dreamily blurred biopic-within-a-film."

"An actress prepares to play the singer Barbara as the film shoot is about to start. She rehearses, works on her character, sings, dances, reads her script, moves in and out of her role. Whilst she relives the singer’s life, the actress finds herself overwhelmed by her own performance and absorbed by the singer’s aura. The film director observes her, films her and gets drawn into the actress’ transformation and interpretation." (French Film Festival)

The movie lightly plumbs that dangerously unsettled space between performing and literally being the protagonist in a biopic.

Once you settle into your bewilderment, however, Barbara an oddly alluring film that does a double backflip on hokey showbiz-bio convention...

There’s something admirably honest about the meta-method Amalric and co-writer Philippe Di Folco have chosen.
