The sort of massive vanity piece that would be easy to disparage if it didn't essentially deliver.
Full reviewCommoner William Wallace (Mel Gibson, who also directs) unites Scotland in their battle against the occupying English from south of the border.
This will live on as Mel Gibson's legacy – an ultimate underdog story told through the theatre of war. Wallace’s pre-battle speech, immortalised through the snippet of dialogue: “They will never take our freedom”, is on the shortlist for the greatest monologues ever seen in cinemas, while the action and combat scenes occupy a similarly lofty position in their own category due to the majesty of the cinematography and the meaning that informs the violence. An absolutely epic treatment that does justice to the magnitude of a national hero.

Full reviewNever tries to confuse our loyalties or question the strategies of our hero or bring home the all-embracing soul-destroying horrors of war for all sides. Braveheart may be rip-roaring, but it isn't all that brave.
