Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The follow-up to 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy and the 15th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sees Chris Pratt return to his role as Peter Quill, AKA Star Lord. Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2', Guardians Vol. 2 will see the team fighting to keep their newfound family together while trying to unravel the mysteries of Peter's true parentage. Cast newcomer Kurt Russell will be playing Ego, a living planet which is, somehow, the father of Star Lord.

Shot for shot, line and line, it's an extravagant and witty follow-up, made with the same friendly virtuosic dazzle. Yet this time you can sense just how hard the series' wizard of a director, James Gunn, is working to entertain you.

There's no denying that it looks amazing. The action sequences, too, leave little to be desired as the Guardians find their footing again by working together in their own, haphazard and unique way.

For all its wit, speed and wacky cameos, this second instalment still feels like a disappointment.

It's fun, though GOTG2 doesn't have the same sense of weird urgency and point that the first film had.

If this new Guardians lacks the novelty of its predecessor it retains the unnerving edge of hysteria, with ever more frequent reminders that nearly all the protagonists have trauma in their past.

Descends into a terribly over-familiar father/son reconciliation yarn, albeit one played out against a backdrop of stunning digital scenery...

Like that tricky second album syndrome that blights so many artists, James Gunn and Marvel's answer is to do it all again, and throw more music and more humour at it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 plays like a second ride on a roller-coaster that was a real kick the first time around but feels very been-there/done-that now.

Bar a few last-act wobbles and the odd tonal shift, Gunn has done it again, crafting a sequel that keeps the focus on the characters we fell for first time around while pumping up the volume.

Good, but not up to the heights of its predecessor.

Big fan of the first and was expecting it to be not as good, pleasantly surprised. I loved it, deeper character development, introduction to new interesting characters. These actors play off each other well and the introduction of new dilemmas only strengthens this. It's fast, flashy and expensive, kind of what you want from sci-fi but most importantly it...

The Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Musical number 2, first things first, second things second. It’s good, some will say better than the first, but I felt more passion for the entrée as its musical tastes were up my alley, this was good, just not spot on for me. The beginning scene and tittles sequence was epic and awesome. It felt more like a ‘Doctor Who’ ‘Star...

The first Guardians of the Galaxy film was so brilliant, funny, good story, great characters etc. but most of all it was a surprise and I was not expecting a great film just your average Marvel film - so with this film I had much higher expectations which is the main thing that ruined it for me. So this film is good, same great characters is very funny in...

It gave us everything we wanted, and yet it gave us nothing. Comedy over plot, and an emphasis on important moments, over cohesion of the story line, meant the film fell a little flat. The guardians come across early on as indestructible, and it eats away at any tension. The most engaging parts of the film lie in the tragedies and dark reveals, in what...

If you judge the best Marvel movie by the number of times re-watched, then James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy is my top MCU movie by far. A gloriously energetic fantasy romp, akin to Star Wars with more laughs and a brighter colour palette. In this second stab the gang's all here, with every aspect of production turned way, way up to eleven. And, whilst...
