Mary Queen of Scots

Mary Queen of Scots

(2013)

Historical biopic based on Austrian novelist Stefan Zweig's 1935 biography, Maria Stuart. More than 400 years after she was executed by Elizabeth, the Protestant Queen of England, Mary Stuart (played by Camille Rutherford) remains the most enigmatic royal in Britain's history.

Director Thomas Imbach told the Guardian he has tried to represent her as "neither a saintly heroine motivated by Catholicism nor ambitious queen obsessed with power, but as a modern woman, passionate and fragile".

The Press Reviews

  • An intimate version – rather than an all-singing, all-dancing epic drama – the dwells on personalities and discussion rather than armies, ships and battles. Full Review

  • The very nature of the monarch’s often inconsistent behavior trips [the director] up — that, plus a weak lead and an ambiguous relationship to the notion of costume drama. Full Review
