Johnson continues to flex his muscles as a charismatic screen presence, and here once again demonstrates his ego-free willingness to make himself the butt of jokes even as he does his derring-do.
Full reviewBased on the novel and a film series from the ‘70s and ‘80s, this is a sci-fi thriller for the family. Disney has re-imagined the story with big-budget effects and some heavy-lifting from Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.
He plays a Las Vegas taxi driver who picks up a young pair of extra-terrestrial siblings on the run from an evil organisation. The brother/sister duo have otherworldly powers, like the ability to teleport and talk to animals (very handy). They enlist their cabbie to get them to Witch Mountain before their foes discover its secrets.

Full reviewHits the spot for its target audience plus parents, for whom the charismatic presence of Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson counts for plenty. It may be predictable, but the story is nicely put together with touches of humour, action pieces and special effects to bring it into the 21st century.
Full reviewModest and diverting, rough and bland, with some good (if not quite Bette Davis caliber) actors and so-so special effects.
Full reviewWhat Johnson does here is provide a credible tough guy action hero in a non-threatening mode. He rules over chases, fights, explosions and an Ooze Monster, yet never seems nasty, so the kids can feel safe around him.
Full reviewHeaps of action to keep even the most restless kid firmly planted in their seat.
Full reviewA fast and furious wild ride of a movie in which the good guys are good, the bad guys are good and the car chases are pretty spectacular.
Full reviewRace To Witch Mountain is available to stream in New Zealand now on Apple TV and Disney+.
