The Little Prince

Two animated worlds collide in this CG and stop-frame animated family fantasy from the director of Kung Fu Panda. Features the voices of Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, James Franco, Marion Cotillard and Ricky Gervais. Based on the well-loved 1943 childrens novella by French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

A fearless and curious prodigy, known only as The Little Girl (Mackenzie Foy), lives with her controlling mother (McAdams). After moving into a new neighbourhood she meets The Aviator (Bridges), an eccentric old bugger. They become friends and he tells her the story of The Little Prince, in which a pilot crashes in the desert and meets a boy from a distant planet.

Adds all manner of narrative bells and whistles to the author's slender, lyrical story of friendship between a pilot and a mysterious extraterrestrial voyager, but stays true to its timeless depiction of childhood wonderment ...

A movie within a movie; the author's delicate, fanciful story is folded into a harsh, modernist commentary on depersonalization and conformity in the contemporary workplace.

It's a film with charm and sweetness, but for me is structurally encumbered by this new present-day narrative level: the smarter, zappier modern animated style makes the marionette-style images of the past look a bit low-octane and quaint.

Osborne respects the integrity of the original story in this charming adaptation.

An ambitious gamble that looks like a sure bet commercially but which, artistically, shortchanges its source material.

At the heart of it all is The Little Girl, who’s being prepared by her mother for the very grown-up world in which they live – only to be interrupted by her eccentric, kind-hearted neighbor, The Aviator. This is possibly the best animated movie of the year so far. The animation isn’t as...
