The Nutcracker and the Four Realms 3D

A young girl is transported into a magical world by a nutcracker toy that comes alive at midnight in this Disney fairy tale adaptation starring Mackenzie Foy (Interstellar).

All Clara (Foy) wants is a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a gift from her late mother. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key, which promptly disappears into a mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world.

If only all that creativity might have served a simpler, more elegant narrative, as opposed to a meaningless war movie in which neither side represents any recognisable cause.

Ultimately, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is a family holiday movie that will do well enough for now; it probably won't linger in your memory long enough to make it until the next inevitable adaptation comes around.

For dance fans, it's not Christmas without The Nutcracker. I suspect in years to come TV schedulers may feel the same about this movie.

When it comes down to it, this opulent fairytale offers plenty of family friendly fun.

The visual allure of this production is undeniable, but having the nerve to be simple and nice all the way through is, even for Disney, verging on being a lost art.

The story remains stubbornly lacking in excitement or enchantment; it's more assaultive, to the point of becoming dull.

As sweet as a sugar plum and only slightly more nutritious, this shows scars from a tumultuous road to the screen but still emerges as a whimsical, likeable fairy tale.
