Rather than a case of the Dude doing the Duke, Bridges' irascible old cuss is a genuine original who feels larger than the familiar saga that contains him.
Full reviewCoen brothers' western, based on the 1968 novel by Charles Portis. True Grit sees the Coen's reunite with Big Lebowski star Jeff Bridges.
Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfield) sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest US marshal she can find, Reuben J. 'Rooster' Cogburn (Bridges). Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, a drinking, slothful, and generally reprobate character. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who wants Chaney for his own purposes.
A previous adaptation of True Grit was made in 1969, starring John Wayne, Glen Campbell, Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper.

Full reviewFrom a classic western novel, the Coens have fashioned a western in the classic mode. Not only does it have the drop on the 1969 version, it’s the first great movie of 2011.
Full reviewIn some ways, much like Charles Laughton's "Night of the Hunter," which the Coens quote both musically and visually, True Grit is a parable about good and evil. Only here, the lines between the two are so blurred as to be indistinguishable, making this a true picture of how the West was won, or - depending on your view - lost.
Full reviewIt's robustly played and ravishing to look at, with its bullish inhabitants and glorious, bleached-bone cinematography. But its furniture is almost too comfortable and too lovingly restored...
Full reviewThis is a film by the Coen Brothers, and this is the first straight genre exercise in their career. It's a loving one. Their craftsmanship is a wonder. Their casting is always inspired and exact. The cinematography by Roger Deakins reminds us of the glory that was, and can still be, the Western.
Full reviewWell-made and acted Coen Brothers remake lacks the humor and resonance that might have made it memorable.
Full reviewTerrific: tough, exciting, funny, gorgeous and bewitchingly acted, this is darn close to perfection.
Full reviewEverybody is at great pains to point out, quite rightly, that this True Grit is not a remake of the 1969 John Wayne movie.
Full reviewTrue Grit (2010) is available to stream in New Zealand now on Netflix and Google Play and Apple TV and Academy On Demand and AroVision.
