Zombies dominate the planet after a worldwide epidemic, as chronicled by undead narrator 'R' (Hoult) whose inner monologue is thankfully more articulate than his outward grunting vocabulary. When R encounters human Julie (Teresa Palmer) and rescues her from an attack, he forms a unique connection with her - a relationship that has the potential to transform an almost lifeless world. But first R will have to win Julie over with his rather limited zombie dating abilities, as well as gain the approval of her father Grigio (Malkovich), leader of a heavily fortified outpost of human survivors. Then there are the vicious undead known as "bonies" to worry about.

Director Jonathan Levine proved adept at blending various tones with previous films 50/50 and The Wackness, both of which struck a fine balance between drama and comedy and marked him as the right fellow to helm “rom-com-zom” Warm Bodies. As that description suggests, Warm Bodies could have been a complicated mess of a film in the wrong hands, but Levine brings this tale to life without it becoming overwhelmingly jarring.
