Golden Globes 2020: full list of winners and a savage Ricky Gervais

The 2020 awards season kicked off with the Golden Globes, honouring the big players of film and television. Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood scored big with the Best Motion Picture Comedy/Musical award as well as globes for Tarantino’s script and Brad Pitt’s performance (see viewing options). WWI thriller 1917 landed the Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama as well as the directing award for Sam Mendes (the film’s in cinemas this Thursday, find times and tickets).

In the TV realm, heavy-hitting dramas Succession and Chernobyl (both available on NEON) proved big winners alongside British comedy Fleabag (available on Prime Video).

Ricky Gervais hosted the show once again, for the fifth and reportedly last time. To ensure that, he made his opening monologue as savage as live telly would allow. For example: “The world got to see James Cordon as a fat pussy. He was also in the film Cats.” He also warned Globe-winners to keep politics out of their speeches because “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything, you know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”
