How to watch Eternity in New Zealand

Heaven holds nothing but heartache in this new rom-com.

From A24 comes a new romantic comedy fantasy about an afterlife more horrifying than any of the tortures of hell ever depicted on screen to date.

How to watch Eternity in New Zealand

Eternity is screening exclusively in New Zealand cinemas from December 5, 2025.

What is Eternity about?

The central conceit is this: after you die, you get a week to decide where to spend *points at the title*. That strikes me as an amazingly arbitrary timeframe, cosmologically speaking, and raises a lot of questions, but let’s press on. For newlydeads Larry and Joan, that should be a choice of where to go together, exceeeeeeept…Joan’s dead war hero husband has been waiting 67 years for her to turn up so he can reclaim the love of his life. Which is hella tough on Larry; how the hell do you compete with that? But he must, and so we again press on. Larry must have done something really bad on the down low to cop a karmic slug this heavy.

The cast of Eternity

Miles Teller is Larry Cutler, with Barry Primus as the old Larry Cutler; Elizabeth Olsen is Joan, Larry’s wife, with Betty Buckley as old Joan; Callum Turner is Luke, Joan’s first husband, who died in the Korean war; Da’Vine Joy Randolph is Anna, Larry’s afterlife coordinator; John Early is Ryan, Joan’s afterlife coordinator; and Olga Merediz is Karen, Joan and Larry’s neighbour.

Why we’re excited about Eternity

Well, we sure do love a metaphorical afterlife, from Defending Your Life to Beetlejuice. Obviously we’re not supposed to take things literally here, but it’s certainly a novel take on the ol’ rom-com “hot ex comes back into the picture” trope. Add in a top notch cast and some sparky dialogue, and we’re dying to see it. Besides, maybe it turns out heaven is polyamorous. Heck, it’d be weird if it wasn’t, come to think of it.
