Kiwi Mini-Blockbuster ‘Fire in Cardboard City’ Wins Big at Show Me Shorts

Fire in Cardboard City, the comedic Kiwi mini-blockbuster, won Best New Zealand Film at this year’s Show Me Shorts Film Festival. This is the second year in a row an animated film has taken the top prize, Spring Jam being the 2016 winner.

When Flicks talked to director Phil Brough during the short’s NZIFF run, he told us: “I tried to put as much action-packed action into seven minutes and just keep it entertaining.” And now, thanks to this win from the Oscar-accredited film festival, the film is qualified for entry to the Academy Awards.

That also applies to the winner of Best International Film, Downside Up, which is a Belgian short set in a world where everyone has Down Syndrome except for one boy.

Roseanne Liang’s Do No Harm was another big winner, taking home three awards: Panavision Best Cinematographer, DEGNZ Best Editor and the Showtools Special Jury Prize for stunt coordination. A ‘proof of concept’ short with feature film ambitions, it continues the New Zealand filmmaker’s strong string of wins and nominations from the likes of Sundance (Grand Jury Prize nominee) and NZIFF (Audience Award winner).
