“A perfect day is here” in this continuation of HBO’s sci-fi saga created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. We’re not even going to attempt to suggest what you could expect from this season, but it’s sure to be wild.

Academy award-winner Alicia Vikander leads this movie biz miniseries from Olivier Assayas (Clouds of Sils Maria), a remake of his own 1996 film of the same name about an actor whose sense of self begins to blur and merge with the character she plays.

The Card Counter

Oscar Isaac, Willem Dafoe, Tiffany Haddish and Tye Sheridan star in this revenge-soaked thriller from Oscar-nominated writer-director Paul Schrader (First Reformed). It’s by no means comfortable viewing, Travis Johnson proclaims, but it’s a serious and provocative film.

Minari

Award-winning drama set in 1980s Arkansas centred on a seven-year-old Korean American boy and his family attempting to start a farm next to their mobile home in the middle of nowhere. It’s a film with immense semi-autobiographical heft, writes Aaron Yap, with moments that feel magically snatched from memory.

No Sudden Move

Don Cheadle leads this ’50s-set crime thriller from filmmaker Steven Soderbergh following a group of small-time criminals hired to steal what they think is a simple document. When their plan goes horribly wrong, their search for who hired them – and for what ultimate purpose – weaves them through all echelons of the race-torn, rapidly changing city.

Mads Mikkelsen leads this Oscar-winning story of a group of friends who put a controversial theory – that maintaining a certain blood alcohol level improves social performance – to the test. As Steve Newall put it, this film is great viewing for our country that drinks like maniacs.
