Trailer and release date for family drama Fast and Furious 9

Another instalment in the long-running family drama franchise, F9 is coming our way in June.

Family. It’s what the Fast & Furious movies are all about. Just the regular bonds between everyday people n’ that. Normal activities like cooking up some barbecue, cracking a cold beer, raising a little one, and some heartfelt chats between dear friends.

Tyrese Gibson’s Roman reminisces on these relatable pastimes in the new trailer for F9. “Y’all ever thought about the wild missions we’ve been on? We’ve taken out planes, trains, tanks… I’m not going to even think about the submarine! And now we’ve got cars flying in the air.”

Ah, it seems we were so focused on the intense emotional arc of the Fast & Furious franchise that we had completely forgotten about the increasingly ludicrous physics-defying action that has come to define these films: a series that started humbly back in 2001 with some street racing and the theft of these hi-tech TV/VCR combos:

Ahead of the impending release of F9—which we will get to see in New Zealand cinemas from June 17—a new trailer hints that the Fast & Furious films might be set to realise their ultimate potential (ie cars in space). See for yourself:

Whether we get fully-fledged orbital automobiles or not, there’s plenty of action absurdity to look forward to—Dom (Vin Diesel) going up against his younger broker Jakob (John Cena), flying cars, giant truck-flips, car-mounted magnets and hopefully, finally, justice for Han… All in the safe hands of returning director Justin Lin.
