Win tickets to There She Goes – a festival celebrating female film pioneers

There She Goes is a selection of pioneering films made by women in the latter half of the 20th century in which the material experiences of womanhood as formed by race, class, sexuality, and nationality were critically represented and deconstructed through the medium of film.

Playing at Auckland’s Academy Cinemas in September and October, There She Goes endeavours to highlight a small selection of the radical work done by women within the (obstacle-ridden) field of cinema. If you wanna know more, Amanda Jane Robinson spoke to programmer Lila Bullen-Smith about why this fest is so damn exciting.

The 1988 feature debut from landmark Māori filmmaker Merata Mita follows Rewi (Anzac Wallace), a man who has run into nothing but trouble in white society.

Agnès Varda’s 1985 drama that won the 1985 Venice Golden Lion, following the circumstances leading to a woman’s death as shown through flashbacks and interviews.

Giancarlo Giannini won Best Actor at Cannes as an anarchist who plots to assassinate Mussolini in this Lina Wertmüller comedy-drama from 1973.

A Place of Rage

Filmmaker Pratibha Parmar celebrates African American women in this 1991 documentary, with Angela Davis, June Jordan and Alice Walker discussing theirs and others’ achievements.

Born in Flames

A group of women organise a rebellion against a new socialist government in Lizzie Borden’s 1983 feminist classic that won the Readers Jury prize at Berlin.

Woman Demon Human

Shuqin Huang’s award-winning 1987 Chinese biopic of opera actress Pei Yanling who made a name for herself playing martial male roles.

Experimental film from 1975 about a restless widow driven to desperation, from Venice Golden Lion-winning auteur Chantal Akerman.

Barbara Loden (who also writes and directs) stars as a woman who abandons her family and shacks up with a petty criminal in this award-winning 1970 drama.
