Win tickets to biopic on cherished Māori activist Dame Whina Cooper

Māori matriarch Dame Whina Cooper aka  Te Whaea o te Motu (Mother of the Nation) is the subject of new drama Whina. We’re giving away double passes to the film, in cinemas June 23.

Rena Owen (Once Were Warriors), Miriama McDowell (Coming Home in the Dark) and Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne (Cousins) play cherished Māori activist Dame Whina Cooper through the years in this biopic directed by James Napier Robertson (The Dark Horse) and Paula Whetu Jones (Waru).

Perhaps best known around Aotearoa for her work as president of the Māori Women’s Welfare League and heading a 1975 hīkoi known as the Māori land march, Dame Whina Cooper worked tirelessly to improve the rights of her people, especially women. Whina tells the story of a woman formed by tradition, compelled by innovation, and guided by an instinct for equality and justice whose legacy as the Te Whaea o te Motu (Mother of the Nation) was an inspiration to an entire country.
