Originally built in 1924, it was fully refurbished in 2003 to host the world premiere of the final film in Sir Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Since then the Embassy has also hosted New Zealand premieres for Jackson's King Kong in 2005 and The Lovely Bones in 2009.
