The plot of this sequel to 2007’s Alvin and the Chipmunks is predictable, especially if you’ve seen High School Musical, with hardly a twist or turn to hold your attention. Instead, it features the requisite musical numbers, plus a slew of sight gags that raised laughter only from children in the audience.
If you thought the Chipmunks were high pitched, wait till you get a load of the Chipettes. Think inhaling a thousand helium balloons and you’re not even close. Their addition to the sequel is supposed to freshen it up but they end up being pretty painful, inspiring some lame duck romantic action. At least Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl), bless him, does his level best to inject some life and vitality but he’s fighting an uphill battle the whole time.Younger kids will lap this stuff up. Its colourful animation, easily digestable plot and zany renditions of well-known pop songs is a good way to keep them entertained for a couple of hours. Just don’t go in expecting to get anything out of it, unless your age is also in single digits.

The Squeakquel is astonishingly high-pitched, like 100 helium balloons being let off in your head

Ross Bagdasarian's enduring characters are a bit tougher to endure in this charmless sequel.

Its high-pitched raucousness will be many children’s idea of fun; their parents will dread having to take them.

What we’re offered is a succession of lifeless scenes punctuated by pratfalls that only a handful of kids in the audience found funny. Next.

A frenetic but undeniably funny follow-up that offers twice the number of singing-and-dancing rodents in another seamless blend of CGI and live-action elements. The new pic comes off as more specifically kid-centric than its predecessor, but should nonetheless have similarly nostalgic appeal for baby boomers.

Disappointing sequel that scores highly in terms of cuteness but fails to learn any of the lessons of the first film and suffers from the side-lining of Jason Lee.
