The full cast of American Pie (1999) return for a high-school reunion, from the directors/writers of Harold & Kumar. There have been seven American Pie movies, but three were spin-offs and this is the fourth in the "original" series (featuring the original cast). More

Over a weekend the entire gang return to East Great Falls. In the years that have passed, Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) married; Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) and Vicky (Tara Reid) said goodbye; Oz (Chris Klein) and Heather (Mena Suvari) grew apart; while Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) still longs for Stifler’s mom (Jennifer Coolidge). These friends come home as adults to reminisce about - and become inspired by - the hormonal teens who aspired to lose their virginity in the summer of '99. Hide

After almost a decade of abstinence (spin-offs side), the American Pie series returns, wiping the dust off of the yearbook, the pie dish and the Tara Reid. Its resurgence makes more sense than, say, Scream 4, but whilst the lads have become adults, the humour is still adolescent. More

The ensemble cast is impressive in its scope, drawing out some genuine surprises as old franchise faces are reintroduced. Through this, Reunion rides the nostalgia factor pretty well, catching up with memorable side characters’ lives. Some cameos make more sense than others (Neil Patrick Harris shows up for 10 seconds of nothing) and two of the main characters (Kevin and Finch) could’ve used less time in the background.

The banter between Jim and his Dad is still just as awkwardly hilarious as it’s ever been, with Jason Biggs and Eugene Levy pulling it off effortlessly. Strangely enough, the funnier “oh yes, we went there” moments are sometimes met with “oh no, we didn’t go there” instances - the encounter between Jim’s Dad and Stifler’s Mum being the biggest letdown.

Most of the comedic situations supervene on heavily contrived moments and it’s a frustrating element that’s quick to get under your skin. Whether this significantly impedes your enjoyment of the film depends on your tolerance of this brand of humour. For those onboard, they’ll be satisfied with Reunion’s ability to rise to the occasion 13 years on. Hide

One more serving of real American Pie

Jordan Flicks Superstar (?)

In a world of sequels, it's not odd to see another American Pie movie be made. Especially considering that there have been 2 commercial sequels already, and 4 Direct-To-Home releases creating a billion dollar franchise.

So does American Reunion continue the trend of a great slice of pie in theatres?

It really does. While it's everything we've seen before from the series, you can't beat a movie that works so well with the continuity that has already been set beforehand.

American Reunion is the story of the Class Of East Great Falls '99 gathering together for their high school reunion.
We first met this group of people in '99, of course, with American Pie and last saw them gathered for main character Jim Levenstein's (Jason Biggs) wedding to Michelle Flaherty (Alyson Hannigan) in 2003's American Wedding.
Amazingly, all the characters who have made a place for themselves throughout the series such as Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) and Vicky (Tara Reid), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and Stifler (Sean William Scott), Oz (Chris Klein) and Heather (Mena Suvari) and fantastic background characters like Stifler's Mom (Jennifer Coolidge), Jim's dad (Eugene Levy) and John (John Cho), the MILF man, return to allow for closure in every aspect.
Storylines that were left open enough to be used in future have been done so, bringing a satisfying conclusion to a much-loved story.

But of course, this isn't what the audience has come to remember about the series. Yes, while all these characters are brilliant in their execution, even more so when the original cast fall so easily back into them, it is the crude, vulgar comedy that all started with Jim and the pie in part one that will get punters back in the seats.
And right from the beginning, even before we see the title, the film is unrelenting in what is thrown at you visually, verbally and mentally. Everything really, that the American Pie series is.

Of course this movie won't appeal to people who don't enjoy this type of humour, nor may it appeal to those who haven't invested in the former parts of the series. But as a possible conclusion to the series, I can't think of any better send off than this film.

I do agree with JORDAN and on top they must have learned from the past. If I cut out the usual USA "I am three years old" sense of humour ( peepoohappyhappypancake) which this movie has as plenty to offer then the rest, then this is the best of them.

Press Reviews

A.V. Club (USA)

In spite of the new writing and directing team—Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg of the Harold And Kumar movies—American Reunion delivers exactly what’s expected, and at the come-what-may pace the earlier entries established. Full review.

Chicago Sun-Times (Roger Ebert)

"American Reunion" seems to depend so much on nostalgia for "Pie" history that I wonder if a first-timer to the series would feel a little out to sea. If you liked the earlier films, I suppose you gotta see this one. Otherwise, I dunno. Full review.

Hollywood Reporter

The wild card in all this remains Seann William Scott's Steve Stifler, the rampaging id whose indignation at his peers' maturity provides most of the film's real laughs. Full review.

New York Times

Remember "American Pie"? If you do, this movie is redundant and sad. Full review.

Rolling Stone (USA)

The laughs that do achieve liftoff are killer. But the real kick is seeing the old gang back and ready to party. Full review.

Time (USA)

I wouldn’t encourage it, but the East Great Falls High class of ’99 could return every decade to face new challenges while displaying the same case of arrested development. Full review.

Variety (USA)

Scenes with Eugene Levy as Jim's lovably squirm-inducing dad or Jennifer Coolidge as Stifler's randy mom represent time well spent; a shot of some guys repeatedly screaming "MILF!" on a football field, not so much. Full review.
