Ben ‘Finn’ Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) is a surf-bum-turned-treasure hunter who is obsessed with finding the legendary Queen’s Dowry – 40 chests of exotic treasure that was lost at sea in 1715. In his quest, Finn has sunk everything he has, including his marriage to Tess (Kate Hudson) and his more-rusty-than-trusty salvage boat, ‘Booty Calls’.

Just as Tess has begun to rebuild her life, working aboard a mega-yacht owned by billionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland), Finn discovers a vital clue to the treasure’s whereabouts. Certain that his luck will change with the newfound information, Finn maneuvers himself aboard Nigel’s yacht and, using his good-natured charm, convinces the tycoon to join him in his the pursuit of the Spanish Treasure. But they are not the only ones after the treasure. Finn’s mentor-turned-nemesis Moe Fitch (Ray Winstone) has also set out to claim the prize…

An appropriate title...

... for there is much promise in the film's stars but on closer inspection it's a total fake.

What's happened to the romantic comedy? Where are the modern day Hepburns and Traceys? It would seem they're dead and long forgotten, and this pair of dumb blondes are supposed to fill the vacuum.

Contrived dross with no heart or humour, the two essential ingredients for a romantic comedy. I should have read the Flicks reviews before I wasted 40 bucks and 2 hours taking the family to see it. McConaughey sleepwalks through it (half naked), Hudson stumbles through it (half baked), and Sutherland fakes his way through it with a ridiculous toff Brit accent... embarrassing.

The film lurches from stupidly coincidental contrivances to poorly motivated reactions. Slapstick can be funny but if you don't buy the characters it's just plain stupid.

The action/thriller "The Deep" has more laughs, and seems to be the inspiration for this piece of smelly fish bait. The Nolte/Bisset film is far more sexy and infinitely more romantic, both in its love story and the adventure of finding sunken treasure.

Don't wait for DVD. It's not even worth a rental.

Star rating should read -2... (they were both missing in action).

This movie is by far the worst movie of the year because this movie is so unreal, i mean mostly every part of it was either fake, sort of funny or just plane stupid.

I should of told dad to read the review first.
But it is good camraing. I can't belive i even considered this movie. This movie should not even be on the top ten list its insane.

But this is just one apinon. If you do like bad movies then see this.

Press Reviews

Hollywood Reporter

A soggy, listless affair, this would-be fun-in-the-sun sunken-treasure frivolity starts taking on water from the get-go, thanks to drawn-out exposition and languid pacing. Full review.

Variety [USA]

A listless romantic comedy that, almost out of desperation, turns a little more violent than necessary near the end. Full review.

Village Voice [USA]

Fool's Gold is the sort of movie that makes you look more kindly upon the WGA strike. It isn't merely bad--it's so desperate that the actors can scarcely conceal their contempt for the material... Full review.
